Foldin' For PCMech!
|
i'm trying to get my school to install folding on all of there machines. they range from 450mhz p2's to athlon 2100's if i can get them running folding they will help the team a lot.
my question is would it be fair to have them all on my account since its my school and my idea to get it installed or setup a new account for them since i don't own them? either way the team over all will benifit but i don't wanna knock people out of standings in the team.

I'd put them under your name, you put forth the effort to get permission, install and maintain the clients, but you should also take responsibility to troubleshoot any problems that may arise from running the client as well.

The deadline for the various WU's should allow for a PII 450Mhz to finish a WU within the time frame if it's running 24/7. I think the minimum time for any of the WU's is 6 days and it's for a small Tinker. The 2100's will fold just fine though.
![]() Personally if I'm footing the electric bill I won't fold with anything less than a gig. Last edited by lil Jimmie; 05-03-2004 at 11:56 PM. |

ok, if i can get them to install it i'll put it under my name.
i figure i'll put genome on the slower ones, like the 450mhz p3's so there is no deadline or anything. the faster ones i would put folding on. it will be awhile before i get findout if this will be allowed or not tho. i'll keep you posted. |

I don't think you'll be able to put G@H on them enhanced08.

He can still use the gah preference which will fetch WU's that have no time limit

yeah, he can use g@h and set it to upload 10 at a time, that way incase the internet goes down for some reason it will keep on working

I really don't have anything against slower boxes. If you have the space and can justify the the power consumption then a slower box will be no problem, but if you are like me, limited on space and concerend about the electric bill plus the added heat then a box under a gig is really not worth it.
I have 21.3Ghz@ 24.5 with 9 pc's and the slowest one is running at 1.8 which is soon to be relpaced with a 2.8C. These are all my systems except for 2 of them so I have to foot the electric bill for the majority of them plus deal with the heat they put off. |

yeah, i see your point jimmie, but since the school computers are on all the time anyway its no big deal.
i'm going to use those 2 movies to help persuade(sp?) them to install it. |

hey, i just started thinking. these computers have DeepFreeze on them which everytime they are restarted all data saved on the HDD is deleted and set back to the default settings.
i got around this before by installing F@H onto my folder on the server (no data is lost there) and running it from there on the computer i was using for the day. i would need to get a HDD and install F@H on it for each computer in the school. (in a different folder for each) would that work for like 400 computers? would the HDD be able to work with all that info being saved and loaded constantly? if i get a 7200RPM, would that help any? |

hmmm.... for 400 computers wow that would be a lot of network traffic and you would need between 6 & 8 gigs of space on the server, I'm not sure if the IT department will go for that.
For a single computer HDD speed has nothing to do with performance but with this kinda data on a server I don't know. I guess if it was a raid 5 it wouldn't be a problem. I'm sure if you looked at the Folding at Home forums you could find better info on this than I can spit out. |

well what i'm thinking is get a HDD and install it on any computer, the server or other computer, and have the whole drive shared. the network trafic isn't really much of a problem that i can see anyway.
what i was meaning by speed is say 50 computers decide to write data all at once. if its fast there wont be much delay between the first and last. if its slow it will take longer. i think it will work, but i'm not very good with networks or anything.

I know this has been addressed before but how do you get it to run as a service as at my school it would have to.

Here you go Fastfly:
http://folding.amdmbpond.com/service.html *This guide is only for NT/2k/XP. But it may work with older versions of Windows, I don't know since I haven't tried it. |
