Couple Folding Questions
I have downloaded the Graphical client from Folding@home, what is the difference with the other text only, which is better? And can I run the dual processor thing with HT on the Graphical Client? Also how do people get the little stat thing at the bottom of their signature?

Client differences: Text is a little bit faster i think, but you dont get the pretty pictures (lol) without a third party program like EMIII, and you need a third party program to minimize it to the system tray (unless you run it as a service). I use the text client because the graphical one causes issues with my taskbar.
HT Question: You can either use two text consoles, or one graphical and one text. You cannot use two graphical clients. Instructions here: http://maximumpc.com/features/feature_2003-06-10.html (yes it works with XP Home too) Not sure about the stat for the sig, sorry. Mike |

The only difference between the graphical and the text is that the text runs in a command window. I don't think one is better than the other. As far as I know you can't run 2 instances of the graphical client, just 2 text.
http://www.statgfx.com/statgfx/getlink.cgi when your done it will give you 3 codes, copy the html and put it in your sig.

mike is correct, you can run two text clients OR one of each. I also have problems with the GUI (as do many people) causing crashes in certain programs. I prefer to stick with the text console for that reason.

I have a question about the folding project. I have downloaded both the screensaver and the stand-alone. However, when I click on the PCMech team, I'm not listed. I checked the FAQ, but can't seem to find anything about how this is updated.
I would appreciate any comments about this. Thanks |

Once you have completed a work unit and it has been submitted to the Stanford servers which update every hour your name should appear on the team list, as for the EOC stats it will take a lil longer as the server updates every three hours.

Well, I decided that I would just go with the screensaver version and it runs great. Out of 400 work units, I've processed about 200 of it so far. However, I still am not showing up on the PCMech team, nor can I access my stats. I did a search for my name 'scomac', I found it, but there are no stats associated with my name. Any ideas??

Welcome aboard scomac!!!
Once you have finished and submitted a complete work unit to Stanford, give or take an hour or 2 after it's been submitted you should appear on the Stanfords stats under PCMech. As far as the EOC stats that will take a few hours longer. Hang in there! |

scomac, on the protein your folding there are 400 steps or frames. Since you've completed 200/400, you're about halfway to finishing your first Work Unit (WU). When it's complete, it'll send the results for that WU to Stanford. After that, your stats will begin to be processed as Jimmie mentioned above. Glad to have you Folding!

Thank you for your input. I think I got it!! That would explain why I'm not showing on the PCMech team yet. Thanks for the help!

No problem. An hour or two after that first one finishes, you'll find yourself on the board. Do you have both comps folding? The second one will be much slower, but when you configure F@H on it, set the preference to Genome@Home projects and it will download and work on smaller proteins. Happy folding!

As of Sunday, I completed my first WU!! I checked on the site and I'm Listed. I downloaded the text based version on the old slow computer and it's been crunching away for about the last 20 hours and I think it's at about 12% complete. I downloaded the text based version for it, but it didn't really give me an option to do the genome@home project, I don't think, unless it was an option in the 'advanced' part in the command window that it opened in. Is there a way to tell using the text client which project it's working on?
By the way, I told my dad about folding@home, and as of this morning he's folding too! scomac |

if you add the tag "-config" (no quotes) to the shortcut to F@H in the startup folder (right click it and type that after what it says under 'target') the next time it starts it will take you through configuring the advanced options. There you can set it to genome@home. then you can delete the tag so you don't have to go through it every time you start F@H

Or you could just open the client.cfg file with notepad and edit the "[clienttype]
type=1" and change the 1 to 2 and that will be the g@h. 0= no preference 1= F@H 2=G@H |

I did not know that. That method sounds much easier to me than the one I posted. Thanks lil Jimmie!
