Games are getting huge or what.

Bought my first 4 gig game today. I heard that Unreal was big at 6gigs but didnt know that Star Wars : Knights Of The Old Republic was 4 gigs. Pretty soon I imagine they'll do like Sony and sell games with HDD's eh .. I took the day off tomorrow so I can load it .

They are getting big. I can't figure out why they aren't even making DVD's an option yet for most games. I would much rather have one DVD than several CD's.

They just start making regular apps with DVDs instead of CDs...MS Encarta Reference 2003 used to be a 5CD set, now, you can get the MS Encarta Reference 2004 for one DVD instead...of course, it'll run slightly slower, but no biggie

Why would it run slower?

What would run slightly slower ? 16x DVD is way faster than 52x CD.

DVD would be faster

CD 52 X 150 kilobytes/second = 7800 kilobytes/second
DVD 16 x 1.3 megabytes/second = 20.8 megabytes/second

20.8 megabytes/second > 7800 kilobytes/second

That's it.
And just to keep the same units: 22160 KB/s (16x DVD) > 7800 KB/s (52x CD).

To get that data rate (22160 KB/s) off a CD it would have to spin 147x. And that is higher than 52x.

And I would like to see Flight Simulator 2004 finally on DVD. So far I've seen FS2004 only as bundles versions (sold in ebay). I still don't get it why they don't finally make DVDs. Eveyone has DVD-ROM drives.
And the few that still don't have one will sure get it once there are more games coz then they see a reason to get one.

I remember the first CDs. Like Flight Simulator 5.1. or Dune II. 20 MB on a CD.
Now I hope they don't wait till they have 7 CDs to fill one single layer DVD. . .

HERE is a chart I picked up a while back that compares DVD speeds to CD speeds.

FFXI was like 6.5 GB I think, thats the biggest I have seen. I have KOTOR but havent installed it yet, this is where the 200GB HDD becomes useful.

Easy mistake to make Kram, I made it a while back but fortunately a mate pointed out my error. And I've been waiting for DVD games too, it seems ridiculous to me that they squeeze massive games onto CD's, you end up juggling CD's trying to find the right one (if you're a bit of a slob like me and leave them lying around instead of putting them back... I'm learning slowly )

Heh, games in DVD have been talked about -and waited- ever since the DVD came out. I remember reading a note in PC GAMER saying that Westwood was going to come out with a DVD bundle packing all the Command & Conquer games: Command & Conquer, Cover Operations, and Red Alert. I am still waiting......

That's actually a really good idea, I'd definitely buy it... Maybe they decided that noone would buy it and canned the idea
Or maybe it was just a rumour

I just do not want to see it be my only option (DVD).

I dont plan on putting a DVD drive in my unit anytime soon. I don't want to buy 1 because I need to install the 2 games a year I buy.

What is ">>" ? I've never seen that.

Anyway, DVD-ROM's aren't that expensive to buy if you don't have one, fudtone.

But I really can't see DVD games becoming popular until most games start becoming about 4GB's in size. While some are that big, a lot aren't.

Maybe by ">>" he meant, a lot bigger?

I do agree that for some games, it would be nice to have it on DVD rather than x number of CD's, but like Dragon said, there's no point of putting a small game on a DVD. But wasn't there a DVD version of UT2004 (and Far Cry)?

Yup... UT 2004 is available in cd-rom or DVD and I think Far Cry is on DVD in Europe.
6 cds or 1 DVD? I'll take DVD any day.

Unfortunately the DVD version of UT2004 is limited. I found a copy of it at Electronics Boutique not too long ago, but I don't think I'll be paying twice for a minute convenience. I do think though that getting up to 6-7 install discs is ridiculous. I did think the UT2004 DVD Special Edition set was particularly nice though. The first DVD had the game in its entirety, the second DVD had each and every video-guide for modding UT2004 from 3dbuzz.com.

Actually they DO already have a game with its own harddrive for PS2. I think it was the latest Final Fantasy for Multiplayer. They sell it with a harddrive that you connect to the system so you can play faster and save files.

It is Final Fantasy XI, even though it is on a hard drive it takes about 10 minutes to go through the interface to start the game, then all the updates you have to install prevent you from playing the game in a reasonable amount of time, so you end up just playing something else. It is kind of annoying.

There are 2 different DVD version, the original "Special Edition" in the metal box with a logitech headset and a later release on DVD with out the headset and fancy box. The price you seen is for the "Special Edition" look around some more for the other DVD version.
