You'll never disgrace yourself... all you have to do is go in there and tell your kingdom or whatever it is in Homeworld that you're new, and they'll help you out. Apart from that, it's tactics and strategies you develop and experience to get good. I used to play Utopia, took me 2 years to reach the top for honour (5th time around I came 10th)

yeah just let ppl know that you are new.
9 times out of 10 (depends on game and comunity) they will lend a helping hand or give you advise. until you get the hang of things.

Okay.
I still think I'm going to be slaughtered but that's what newbies are for, I guess.

Most RTS games are designed so that newbies and the smaller, less skilled players really only come up against other smaller players, while the larger 'slaughtering' players attack each other. Also, usually the larger players leave the smaller ones alone, the games are usually designed so it's not worth their while to attack smaller players.
So don't stress, go in there, experiment, and have fun

I have always wanted to get into RTS games, but truth be told, I am horrible at them. Maybe it's the "RT" part of the RTS, I'm not sure, but I've tried tons of them. Good luck to you though.
