I'm trying to justify getting a new computer to keep up with the new stuff coming out, e.g. HL2, Doom3,etc.
Current system: Pentium4 1.7GHz Geforce3 64Mb video 512 PC800 RDRam Altec Lansig audio (crap) This system ran fine in my Warcraft 3 days. System I am debating on purchasing/building: AMD Athlon64 FX-1 Asus SK8V K8T800 940 socket mobo ATI Radeon 9800XT 256MB 1GB DDR PC-3200 Sound Blaster Audigy 2ZS Last edited by Parker03GT; 07-16-2004 at 11:19 AM. |

I think it should work, but it won't have all the features all maxed out and all. But it'll probably work.

Yeah, but not on max settings. You're in a better situation than me
. Good thing you got the P4 in there, also maybe instead of building a new system you could save tons of money and just upgrade the graphics card? I dunno, your system isn't too bad, but if you're still gonna be gaming for a while, I guess you should buy a new computer. That one will only last so long.

Don't get a FX, instead save the money for a 6800GT or x800Pro. XP 3200+ or AMD64 3200+ will be fine and should be half price.
Don't worry about an Audigy. Doom3 processes all audio in the CPU for only a few percentage points. So you with onboard audio and me with an Audigy will hear the same things b/c it bypasses everyone's sound card. Stick with a gig of RAM. That's the standard in my book now.

With the sound card, although it might not matter with Doom 3, what about other games, such as HL2? Edit: Sorry, forgot, don't do 939 3200+, have to get a 754 instead. Last edited by WhatsThisBoxFor?; 07-16-2004 at 12:15 PM. |

Well, if you want a sound card, then it all comes down to your budget.... which is how much again?

I don't really have a budget.
But at the same time, $4K is a bit too much for a computer. So what's the difference in the AMD64 and the FX-1, FX-3? I've always been a pentium guy but I hear better things for AMD. Thus the reason for the switch.

You should be OK with most of your parts, but you would be better off purchasing a high end video card than what you have right now.

You should stay with Intel as the processor is not as important as the video card when it comes to gaming. Besides, you shan't see any improvement with a 64-bit CPU since the apps are still 32-bit. You will just have half of the processing power sitting there doing nothing. Thing is, you do pay for 64-bit, but will only use 32.
