Last time I downloaded a demo it was UnrealTourney2k4 and I got it at 4MBps (awsome site but the aftermath of spyware was ridiculous)

the demo was aboot 250MB and it took me 5 minutes . Other than that I dont download much of the internet, Im too afraid to get viruses and such.

Well I have downloaded Gigs upon Gigs, but not on 56k, since mine always pooped out on me mid download. Never could get any of those new game demos

And a demo isn't nearly as large, and I still failed to download it, thus no downloads so large could ever happen

I think I will stick to my DSL and buying a CD

I shudder to think of how long that would have taken. But I know how you feel. I've only had DSL for about 6 months now, and I don't know I went without it for so long.

Do you have more than one computer? NM...I just realized that you don't have a network with dial up so a second computer couldn't help you, you would have had to use the computer that you were downloading from. You have 1000000X more patience than I have, because I would barely wait 2 hours for a 20 mb file to download...lol..

Hey colecifer, you've got more money than I do, if you guys can afford DSL! Here in little ole' Florence, MS we just got DSL late last year and the price was was way too high for my budget!! So I don't have any other choice than to use dialup. And talk about headaches! I just contacted my ISP's Tech support today for help cause my connection was slower than molasses in a Canadian winter. thorlo6

I remember my days of 56K, I actually have had to go to school to not get disconnected every 15 minutes . At school, I was fortunate enough to get T1...did all my downloading there. Now, DSL made a world of difference.

Same situation for many of the people I know, on the budget note. Wonder how soon the Broadband over electric lines will become usable to more people.... coulda sworn I read something about it in a magazine, it being like $30 for 1Mb down.... maybe that could help to lower Cable/Broadband prices.

That powerline deal would be cool...

Additonally I think anyone who uses Cable/DSL remembers the days of Dial-Up...I used to onsider people with 56K lucky because the ISP my dad got was local and it usually only connected at 33.9kbps

50.6, most of the time.

As long as don't do a lot of downloads and multimedia stuff, it holds up fine.

I really feel lucky, I've never had to deal with dial up. Then agian we didn't get our first comp until about four five years ago and my dad just went ahead and got cable.

You should feel lucky...dial-up sucks....but I do have to say having had dial-up really makes your appreciate cable...so you won't know how lucky you are until you go to someone's house and are forced to use dial up...lol...

Yeah, i have no idea how much it cost when we first got it, but my parents opted for it not me. I was just really happy that they did. My dad makes decent money(i think not sure) but he is ususally pretty cheap. He had just gotten DSL out at his office so he knew the huge difference it made. I'm just glad i have it because dial up is never a fun thing to have.

I've been stuck on dialup for a decade now. Started out with AOL on my old Packard Bell and am now using EarthLink. I get about 40K on my laptop and on every other computer we have (the Alienware, Compaq, and iBook) we only get around 28K. It really is depressing. Out in the sticks we don't get normal broadband so it's a choice of satellite at $70/mo or IDSL at $90/mo. My father recently got DSL at his office though so he's been thinking of dropping the cash for IDSL (we don't like satellite because of the lag etc.).

The largest thing I downloaded on dialup was an update to The Sims Online at about 450MB. After that I decided to quit TSO due to the constant updates that were just too much for my little dialup.

Can't wait for Broadband-Over-Powerlines!!!
