DX 9C is now out....
Get it here : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
And if you haven't gotten the security update for DX 9 yet it's in the related resources box.

What O/S, what video card, what video card drivers, and what version of far cry are you running?
I hope you're not running an ATi card with the far cry 1.2 patch. |

read this from Rage 3D :

When you say the SDK allows you to run Farcry 1.2 using SM3.0 'properly' what do you mean exactly? I was under the impression you simply added some registry entries for the WHQL Nvidia Drivers 61.76 to enable SM3.0 then you turn on the SM3.0 Path by updating a Farcry shortcut in the target area specifically enabling the path (I cannot recall the path switch exactly). Do you mean that if you include the SDK file in \bin32 that you don't have to run Farcry with the command line switch to turn SM3.0 to 'on'?" P.S - I know DirectX9.0c offers SM30 support (Well that's why it's important to Nvidia owners) but what does it offer (Specifically) for ATi's current SM support? This is NOT a dig at ATi I'm simply curious as I own both cards. First off I must apologize for a typo I just saw in my original post when you replied with a qoute. The file in the SDK and Far Cry is named fxc.exe not xfc.exe. From what I understand the fxc.exe file is used to compile/recompile the 2.X/3.0 shaders in Far Cry. The SM3.0 readme file explains it fairly well but I just don't have a copy handy to post right now. It would help if somebody that has it could post it.The version that shipped with Far Cry was a old version from the summer 2003 SDK. I would guess that it would benefit ATI cards as well with SM2.X support. Normally the developers would automatically include this file with the patch. But from what I understand, at the time the patch was released the file was still under Microsofts NDA, so they could not release it publicly. They did send the newer version to web sites under NDA to use with reviews but they left it out of the public release. I would assume that now that Microsoft has made the file public it would be included in the next patch. It's ironic that they released the SM3.0 patch then told you that you need a file that you could not get. All that is fixed now though. You just have to do as you stated above then replace the fxc.exe file in the Far Cry bin32/ folder with this version below that 3dchipset was kind enough to strip out for us. If you don't use the newer fxc.exe file you may get rendering errors like when your flashlight is on. http://www.3dchipset.com/#1275 Some info from Digit-Life "The fact is, FarCry cannot recompile its shaders, written in HLSL/Cg, and so it uses the external compiler from Microsoft: fxc.exe." If you just want to move your 'Saved Games' folder while you unistall/reinstall FarCry you certainly can but yes there is something going on with that game that you seem to have run into. |

Remove all the video drivers from your computer, use DriverCleaner. If you don't already have it get it from here : http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3214.html Since it sounds like something is corrupting the install as it happens the fewer programs you have running during the better. If you have a wireless keyboard borrow an old ps2 one for this. Install DX 9C first, then a fresh set of video drivers. If that won't work you may need to do an OS repair. |

Is this DX9C recommended for all to install? I hear that there are drivers or something for Doom 3...something that will bump up the performance on the game. I will get my desktop's Radeon 9800 Pro up to DX9C once I get home...why not update it now when it's already out and will eventually have to do it

The 4.9 betas are the drivers you want for that. You'll need DX 9C along with them. |

Too much too fast
- Got DooM III last night, which updated DX to 9B. So now you should go with 9C and the 4.9s? Any "best" order to load them? (my 3.1s seem to be doing fine...)

The combination apparently removes the performance penalty that ATI has had under open GL. Doom 3 plays much better. |

I'm going to go for it. Do you recommend updating DX first or the 4.9s first?
edit: PS: like I said earlier: Too much too fast! LOL This morning's news just said that MS just released Win XP SP2 -- which I believe contains 9C...

I did the 4.9s first and then DX9c. I dont think the order matters too much. Doom 3 does run better!

It will matter if you have trouble getting DX 9C to install, which is Vince809's problem.
If he's still having no luck when he posts back here, I'll suggest SP2. |

Not sure if I want SP2. Either way, I think I'll do SP2 or DX first, then the 4.9s. Won't have time today, though, to play with it. All my free time was spent doing DooM
-- and I gotta get busy now
