doom 3 will only run on xp or windows 2000
"DOOM 3: Windows 2000 and XP
Posted by Newsfactory on Thursday, July 29 @ 00:16:34 CEST PlanetDoom reports there have been rumours flying around lately that DOOM 3 would not be able to run on computers that have Windows 98 or Windows 98SE as their operating systems. Since we here at planetDOOM dislike rumours in all shapes and sizes, we went straight to the horses mouth so to speak and asked Activision themselves. The reply we got was that it is confirmed and indeed true that DOOM 3 will only run on Windows machines that have windows 2000 or XP and not lower. So there you have it, looks like some peoples upgrading woes just aren't quite over yet." just seen this, dont know if its old news, its new to me

Obviously, it's all part of the Microsoft conspiracy.

Interesting, but not too surprising. I don't think it is a major issue though. I'm sure all serious gamers, and anyone building a new system for the next generation of games will be adding Windows XP to their shopping lists. The only people I know of still using 98 have older machines and don't game anymore.

It's not a big deal. I don't know any gamers that still use 98. Things have to move on some day. It's not a conspiracy. Windows 98 is old technology. Imagine how things would be if they still had to make games compatible with Windows 3.1.

Excellent!! About time companies started pushing the envelope to bury DOS-based OSes.
And this is not about a M$ conspiracy, but about moving on to better technology. Face it, DOS-based OSes are a thing of the past and just can't cut it for today's software. Try to run IE 6 on Windows 98 and you will see what I am talking about. The new gaming APIs need the effectiveness of a NTFS OS in order to run efficiently and without threatening the stability of the system.

If someone still has Windows 98, they can just get it for XBOX...and if they don't have an XBOX, then its too bad. But as stated before not many gamers still run 98, but the ones that Do I'm sure will be disappointed...LOL! Not only will they have to pay $55 for the game, but at least $90 to upgrade their OS!
It's no big surprise though, as I am sure most games will start coming out for XP and 2000 only. Napster requires XP or 2000, so anyone with 98 who wants to use that is out of luck, or they can try something like iTunes, which I think is still 98 compatible. |

Nope, Itunes won't run on 98, it needs XP or 2000. I know a lot of people who still have windows 98 cos they don't need to buy additional licenses for more machines so it is a bit annoying for them, but an upgrade to 2000 or XP is worth it just cos of the stability.

A 98 is an alright OS if the user isn't planning to play any recent games. is also runs faster than the XP OS.

I'm glad things are shifting to XP as a standard. XP is a leap in stablity and speed than ME and earlier (Excluding 2000).

I game, and I run both 98 and XP Pro on my machine.
Win 98 boots slower and shuts down faster than XP on my machine. As far as how they run, win98 runs faster simply because I have the bare minimum amount of memory to run XP.

Thats on the top of my upgrade list, as it sounds like I'll need a bit more than 128 megs to run doom3!
