My first PC Game

I've finally got a PC that's gameworthy, and I wanted to get a really good game for it. I'm a really big RPG fan and I would liked to get some suggestions on some good RPG's for the PC (I am a Final Fantasy fan but I did not jump for FFXI for reasons given below).

Note: My PC is nowhere near a router or other method of getting a wired internet connection, I'm on a wireless G network (I live with some picky human beings who won't let me put holes in the wall to drag an RJ-45 cable). As a result, I'm trying to avoid on-line games (Doom 3 being the exception). I am new in the PC gaming arena, so if my assumption that "wireless-G for on-line gaming = bad idea" is wrong, by all means, let me know.

Try Warcraft 3 if you like role playing games. You can play online or solo.

Using Wireless G networking should have no bearing on your ability to play games, since the 802.11G standard can connect at up to 54 MBps, which is far faster than your internet connection.

"since the 802.11G standard can connect at up to 54 MBps, which is far faster than your internet connection."

What exactly do you mean by this? I am new to networking and have been researching it a little bit and have heard this phrase a couple of times.

Thanks

The theoretical max throughput of the 802.11g standard is 54MBps at a maximum range of 300 feet. However, depending on your connection, it may only be 1, 2, or 3 MBps. Also take into consideration that those numbers are theoretical maxes, and would be extremely difficult, and more likely impossible, to achieve.

It means that the wireless connection will not cause online gaming to "lag". Lag is when your computer "pauses" or slows down gameplay so it can catch up with the data being transfered.

I realize that 54 MBps is a theoretical max throughput, but with my Wireless G connection I get that when I'm near my router, and when I'm farther away, going through multiple walls, when Windows XP says I have a very low signal strength I still get anywhere from 5 to 36 MBps, which is still much faster than an average internet connection. So in my experience, the connection should be sufficient for online gaming, you just need to be careful and aware of your distance from and your position relative to your router, if your signal is strong enough the connection will be fast enough for gaming.

I completely agree with you. I wasn't trying to say that it would be bad for gaming, I was simply trying to clarify for Computer_User what 802.11g was. I guess I didn't put enough emphasis on the fact that even at a fairly low speed compared to the max throughput of the router, it's still faster than the internet connection, and still fine for online gaming.

Either way it goes, I'm officially happy, since it's been clarified that I CAN do on-line gaming with wireless. Not only am I going to do it for my computer, but I think it's high time my Playstation 2 joined my network.

Lotsa replies, but most of them suggest games ComputerDragon didn't ask for. He asked for RPGs.

Morrowind is the best RPG nowadays. If you haven't played the Baldur's Gate and the Fallout series, go buy those games now.

I recomend the Baldur's Gate series too. Also Dungeon Siege is good but more action than story. If can find a copy of Planescape: Torment, get it. That's a fantastic RPG.

Morrowind and the xpacs, I've played all of them and let me tell you, it is a long ass RPG, I never knew I could sit and play for 10-12 hours at a time without a break!

I agree with Spartan. Try Warcraft 3 and get the expansion Frozen Thrown. I still play that game often myself. Here is a couple good links http://www.battle.net/war3/

i dont know if anyone brought this up, but i wouldn't go with Diablo 2. Although it was a good game, the 2 of my friends that had it (the only two i know that did) ended getting viruses from it...

I would go with Halo, and Doom 3 when it comes out... it might be out already...

If you like real time strategy games... i strongly reccomend Starcraft and Warcraft 3
