I did that trick with c: -> program files -> doom 3 -> base -> doomconfig.cfg and using the 4.9 betas and everything is running smooth on High . dont get me wrong I do get a few hiccups when the action gets heavy but hey I can handle that
bob edit: also using Radlinker to up my speeds a bit to 450mhz

Im using the 4.9 betas also with doom 3. Running on High settings, 800x600 and no problems with a 9800 Pro.
There is a warning not to overclock while using the 4.9s and playing doom 3. I guess a couple people have already burned out there cards.

They do help. Before, I had a lot of hiccups, but now it is very smooth. I only get hiccups when I enter a new area.

Do you need DX9C to use these drivers? Does DX9C come on the DOOMIII CD?

DX9.0b comes on the Doom 3 CD. i think ATIs are having the issues with overclocking while running the game. my card is overclocked a decent amount and i havent come across any artifacts or white dots as of yet.

So, do you need DX9C installed to use these 4.9 betas?

Okay, thanks for the heads-up. I'm negotiating a deal for DOOM III as we type, so I'll most likely end up putting these betas to good use.

4.9 really helps. The game kept freezing on me when i opened doors, and now it does not.

Boosted my 3dMark01 score by a good 1000 points. Doom runs smooth as well. I only noticed an occasional hickup before, now I have nary a problem in heavy firefights. ATI really did a nice job with these.

I finally finished the download, after about 5 failed attempts. I'm just about to install 'em and run some benchmarks.

ok guys, these are some really stupid questions but i gotta know cause i also wanna play doom 3, but it's jus too expensive for me rite now
![]() 1) What are these beta drivers for? what do they do? 2) these benchmarks. . . .wht are they. i know they are based on frame rates (or are they?) but how are they rated. you obviously cant' get 11000 fps! and also wht are 3dmark01? thnks |

3DMark01 and 03 are 3D benchmarking programs that run a suite of tests(some of which are based on actual game engines, the rest are for point sprites/bump mapping, etc.)that stresses video card performance. The FPS(or whatever the specific test is scored with)are recorded, and it spits out a composite score at the end. Check 'em out at www.futuremark.com

Well, the 4.9s picked up my score in '01 by about 700, and in '03 by about 400. Not bad for a simple driver update. Not to mention the Temporal Anti-Aliasing which was missing from the 4.4s I was using before. These seem fairly stable as well.

What shouldn't I overclock? Just the VC or does that affect the CPU too?
I am currently running on an overclocked CPU, but the VC remains at its factory settings.

Anyone know when these drivers will go official? I'm kind of skeptical in downloading beta drivers.

Doom3 is running very nicely for me with these drivers, haven't run any benchies though. One thing is, everytime i reboot I get the whole "windows has detected new hardware" deal. I suspect it has something to do with mine being an All-In-Wonder card.

Sorry to play devil's advocate, but I have found that uninstalling not always removes everything. Some dlls and other minor files can remain in the system.

Well, I don't know why you're scared. These drivers work perfectly. If Someone installed them on here and I didn't know they were betas, I never would've guessed. They really help on Doom 3 and onther games run perfectly fine, such as Far Cry.

I am scared of screwing things up and then being unable to receive any support from the developer because they are beta and unsupported drivers. I have messed up my system before with full supported drivers, don't even want to think about what the situation with betas might be.

I guess you could cover yourself by setting a System Restore point before installing them.

Not really. System Restore is far from being the panacea to computer mistakes. I have used extensively and have found that files are lost, some others persist, amid other minor things.
It didn't solve my problems with Morrowind, even after I restored to a point where the game was running perfectly. The game still lags. |
