Question

Hi, I'm hoping someone here can help me out -

What I'd like to do is take my old collection of home videotapes and convert them to either VCD or SVCD format to play on my DVD player. I've been reading around a few sites, but I can't seem to find any good reviews etc. of video capture devices. Currently I have only a voodoo3 PCI, so I need to get something different.

I've been looking at the Radeon 32MB All-in-Wonder card as it seems to get decent reviews, but they rarely focus on the video capture. Are there big differences in these quality wise? I don't want to bother if the quality isn't going to be decent (i.e. VHS quality). I'd also likely get a digital camcorder in the next year or two, so that is a consideration as well...

Should I look at these new USB devices, or maybe just a vid in/out card by itself? I'm at a loss...

TIA,

B

Well, I own an 8Mb All-in-Wonder Pro and a 32Mb DDR All-in-Wonder RADEON and the Radeon is just AWESOME. I've been using the digital VCR function and the video quality is excellent. The 8Mb is good for TV, but the Radeon kicks it around the block.

Thanks Hal - I'm slowly getting up the nerve to spring for the Radeon AIW...all the reviews I have read say it's the best all-round card by a long shot. Really the question now is just whether there is a cheaper alternative - one of those USB jobs or a straight up vid in/out card to complement my Voodoo 3 rather than replace it (although I would replace it sooner or later anyway).

Thanks for the advice.
