DOOM 3..What should I upgrade first?

I have a 2200xp
512 mb pc3200
geforcefx5200 128mb
on board sound card...
Doom 3 plays good but it studders and the sound skips sometimes ,what would be good to get first besides a $500 video card?

I'd say you're up to par in everything except the video card, there.

What motherboard and HDD are you using?

definately the graphics card..
you can pick up a radeon 9600xt
or better yet a radeon 9800pro/xt if you can afford it..
you'll get MUCH better performance, but not have to spend $500...
with any other upgrade you'll only see slight improvement in performance.

Everyone sounds to be doing well with their systems and D3 except me.

I am running a Barton 2500 /w 1gb RAM and have an Radeon AIW 9600.

My 3DMark scores can't break 2500...anyone have any suggestions because before I could have sworn I was getting scores around 7500?

My friend has a 2.4 P4, 1GB RAM and a 9500PRO and he plays at high settings with no problems.

Graphics Card for sure. The Radeon 9800 Pro is at a godo value right now - if you can pay more like 300 USD, go with the GeForce 6800.

Hope that helps,
kram

The 9800Pro is an 8Pipeline card, the X800 has 12, the X800XT PE has 16 I think. Although the clock speeds could become what a X800's is you will never get the extra pipelines. 9800XT is the same.

If the 9800 Pro has the right core (I think it's R360), it can be modded to a 9800 XT. I don't think it's possible to reach x800 speeds with a 9800 Pro.

Looking at it you could overclock the xt by that far, with good cooling, however high the clock speed though it will not match the quality/performance of the extra 4 pipelines (considering you can't overclock that far.)

you dont need some wicked card to make it play good. my 5700 ultra breezes right along at 1024 x 768 on high with 4xAA. the best bang for the buck right now for Doom 3 is probably a 5900XT. they can be had for around the price of a 5700 ultra, but you get the added benefit of 8 pixel pipelines.

I don't think RAM would be too much of a priority, you'd just have to endure 3-5minute loading times, like I do with my 256MBx2 PC3200 2-3-2-5. I run Doom 3 AWSOME With 512mb RAM (The 9800pro helps, too )
