Your thoughts on DOOM 3?
First of all does Doom 3 feel like Doom at all to you? Im mostly talking to those who played the original doom when it first came out.
Its a great game and looks great and everything, but it doesnt feel like doom to me, sometimes i forget that its "doom" im playing. To me it feels like, a satanic version of half-life. To me, doom 3 is to the early version of doom, as quake 2 was to Quake 1....Actually now that i think of it, i think doom 3 and quake 1 feels more similar....... Im not complaining at all, dont get me wrong, ive owned every game Id software came out with, im a big fan, doom 3 is a kick ass game... what are your thoughts? |

Ya, it feels like DooM, but there are things that make it not feel like DooM. One thing, for me at least, is all the fraggin' (so far; I haven't finished it yet) is done very close up and personal. With the original, a lot of the shooting was done from a distance so you can trade some shots. Also, in the original, the "hero" was faceless which made news if I remember right, which means your imagination made the character. Now the hero has a face, so you are limited on "who" the hero is.

Hehe - the picture looks so similar to Wolfstein 3D - the first ever 3D game. Of course, id software made/developed that so no wonder the resemblence.
Of Doom 3, I think it has met expectations to a sufficient degree, not completely, however. As it was inevitable, the scenes are all almost identical - dark room, enter, creatures pop out. Couldn't help it that much though - dark places on Mars. I do believe that they could have done better though. Talk about massive expectations for HL2 ![]() kram

Played it, wasn't my thing, sold it. I remember playing Doom when it first came out, and I guess I had never regaled it to the FPS/Horror genre. Oh well, till the next game.

good game...although not great. im not a half-lifer either, so im not really looking forward to that game. i might have to buy it to see what all the hype is about. the thing i want the most...iD needs to make a Wolfenstein with the DooM 3 engine, now that would be awesome.

Wolfenstein was similar to Doom (or I should say Doom was similar to Wolf) except I don't remember ever having more than one level (ground level, no balconies and overlooking ledges) in Wolf, just like running around one big maze.

BTW, they are working on Return to catsle Wolfenstien 2. It' will be using the new DOOM 3 engine.
So far I'm half-way through DOOM 3. At least I think I am, I just defeated the 2nd boss. I'm really enjoying it for what it is, a boom boom shooter -- linear and simple. I've been reading some posts about doom 3 in other Forums. Most gamers I think are being overly critical. IT'S DOOM not FAR CRY... what did you expect? Take it for what it is. I give it an 8.5 out of 10.

I like playing the games but some of the parts are ridiculously difficult. For example, to kill sarge you have to hit his bfg green globes with bullets before he incinerates you!!??. I had to cheat on this one and get the bfg and use it on him first!

I'm impressed with the attention to 3D environment detail. Doom3 has raised the bar on what FPS'ers should look like.
Graphically, Doom3 is the king (for now). Although there were areas in Farcry that rival Doom3. It will be interesting to see what Half-life 2 brings to the table. |

Oh, okay. All my friends have played with the HUD showing and every pic I have ever seen has the HUD with the face. I always play with the HUD to and wouldn't even think of someone taking it off, why? Not like you have to look around up and down to see enemies all that much. The face was kinda cool as in you get bloodier/more beat up the less health you have. Innovative and fun. But I see your point on things too.

The "why" part was (is? I still play it from time to time) to gain screen real estate
I just fired it up and took a screen shot for comparison. (shot 1)And just to share with folks that may have never seen the original, shot 2 is a classic shot of our DooM hero. The shot is from an "companion" CD . It's the same shot that's on the Ultimate DooM release, but on that CD it's in black and white. (These two were the only ones I could find quickly.) You still play Doom 1? You play it in XP? Just wondering if you use any special software or if you play in 98 or something. I still play Unreal 1 but that definately isn't as old as Doom.

return to castle wolfenstien bored the hell out of me
anyway, this weekend, i spent a lil time playing: final doom, quake 1, and return to castle wolfenstien until the fedex guys deliver my new video card so i can play doom 3 on my comp.... IMO, doom 3 feels like its own game...... but it was kinda funny how all id's game are very similar......quake 2 and quake 3 should have been their own title and Q3 being the sequal to Q2 quake 1 felt alot like doom to me....of course it reminded me of wolfenstien too.....with the dogs especially.....but i think quake 1 should've been the doom 3.... |

I got flamed when I started a similar thread on another board.
I played Doom 2 for 2 years with my friends over a dial-up connection. Deathmatch and CoOp. I thing what I dislike about this game so much is the future setting. I miss my shotguns. I don't like damn future shotguns! Give me a double barrel damnit! There is definetly a key element that is missing from this game that I can't quit place. Its like Halo with demons and I hate Halo/future FPS games. |

- I use jDooM that Nuclear Krusader turned me onto, and he posts above. (Thanks again, NK ) Plus, I have Hundreds of wad files that keep me entertained. And that is one thing that will be sorely missed: people making levels / wads and posting them online. I believe that is one of the major things that propelled DooM into stardom; besides being a good game, you'd never got bored with all the downloads! |

Open it up and find the line: seta r_gamma "1" Then you can change the "1" to "1.x" to suit your needs. Each vid card / monitor combo will yield different results. I found that "1.8" is too bright and totally ruins the graphics, and 1.2 is too low. I'm liking 1.5 for now, but note it seems to not work all the time. It's like some scenes default to the "1" setting while you can go a little further and it brightens up some. HTH TwoRails |

I used to love Wolfenstein, walking along all the walls that had gaps behind them on the map pressing space bar to try find secret passageways, and especially secret passageways within passageways. Also, the bloodied face was sooo cool!
I personally don't like Doom 3... if you asked me why, I couldn't tell you, I just don't. Seems farcical and low-tech (although I agree the graphics are amazing) |

Interesting. I know people that don't like it because of too little story line, and because of too much story line, and other reasons, but that's the first time I've heard it as too farcical.
I love what makes this world go around!

I was a little reluctant to pay 55 bucks for a game, especially after seeing all the mixed reviews. I'm glad I did. This is one piece of software that is worth it. I just bought it last night and played it for maybe two hours. I came home and played it with all the lights out and 5.1 cranked. This is one awesome game. I love the darkness. It's awesome when you go into an area, you hear a noise and the lights go out. You click on your flashlight only to see that you're surrounded by monsters. Then you're attacked and it's on! Definitely a scare factor of 10. I don't think it would be nearly as fun without a good audio system. As for not "feeling" like Doom... Doom was 10 years ago, look how far technology has come. All in all, I would give this game a 10, from what I have seen of it. I can't wait until the Classic Doom mod comes out.

I began playing Doom 3 a couple of days ago and I love it so far. I'm not bothered very much by the lightning, it doesn't seem that dark for me. What I love about the game is that is very similar to the original; shot first, ask questions later. That's my kind of action game. No time for long stories, I got some monsters to kill. One thing I hate of Doom 3 (and all FPS that have this feature) is the reload. There's nothing I hate more than being swamped by a dozen demons and my guy stops in the middle of a shooting to reload. So I got to run around dodging bullets and crap while reloading my weapon.
