Tip to brighten up DooM 3

Hi All,

A lot of folks think DooM 3 is too dang dark. While there's a least one flashlight mod out there, I want to wait until I finish the game "naturally" before I try them out.

In the mean time, while tinkering around, I found you can jack up the brightness of the game by changing the CONFIG.CFG file. Make sure to make a backup first, of course.

Open it up and find the line (which is near the end of the file):

seta r_gamma "1"

Then you can change the "1" to "1.x" to suit your needs. Each vid card / monitor combo will yield different results. I found that "1.8" is too bright and totally ruins the graphics, and 1.2 is still too low. I'm liking 1.5 for now, but note it seems to not work all the time. It's like some scenes default to the "1" setting while you can go a little further in the game and it brightens up some.

HTH

Is altering this file essentially the same as adjusting gamma in the in-game settings? Or is this something different? Because gamma is alright if your monitor is just darker-than-normal, but tends to wash out colors when used too much.

From what I can tell so far, yes, it is different from the in-game setting. Setting the monitor gamma in Windows does NOT affect the game, as the game sets it back to the default of "1" unless you change it.

Thanks TwoRails, I've been using the mod that allows you to use both the flashlight and a weapon at the same time, but I'm very interested in this.

i'll stick with the duct tape mod for now, but this sounds like a good alternative.

It may not suit every one, but at least it's a very quick tip. It only takes a moment to edit the file. The longest part is exiting the game and changing the gamma setting to a new value if you don't like the one it's set at.
