That article makes me mad towards Valve for lying.

Pissed

What did they know and when did they know it ?
Not only had ATI better honor those game vouchers promptly, if they've got any smarts they don't pull any stunts like this again.

Interesting article.

I wonder if ATi/nVidia are going to back any games in the future...

Quite the nice read. Thanks wolfie. For me, I'm not upgrading until X800/6800 prices come down. My 9200 is still running strong!

I think a new company needs to come out, make a kick ass gfx card, and blow both ATI and Nvidia out of the water so bad that everyone will buy their product, so ATI and Nvidia will go out of business, Then no one will have to worry about which card plays better with what game, cuz everyone will have the same hardware(who cares about monopoly!). It's starting to get real old.

Well first off, that certainly won't happen. Second, it would not be good. Competition is better than a monopoly. It would be good if a third company were to produce a competetive card. It would force them all to make better cards at better prices.

I was being sarcastic. My point was that it doesn't matter how powerful your card is anymore as much as it used to, it depends if the software is specially written to run better on a certain brand of cards. I wasn't being serious, and I know that wouldn't happen . What they are doing now is trying to eliminate the competition. Doom 3 was written to run better on Nvidia cards, HL2 is being written to run better on ATI cards. In the the end it's one company tryin to eliminate the competition of the other. People are gonna want the hardware that runs the software the best. How many times has that question been asked "Which card will play doom 3 faster". It's a bunch of crap what all of these companies are pullin, it needs to stop.

In my opinion, this is the exception, not the rule. Almost any other game out there right now is going to run, from a real-world standpoint, equally well on both cards. Now when you start getting into FPS, AA, Rez, etc. then the scale tips.

Now correct me if i'm wrong but what i got from that article was that the people at Doom 3 didn't want it to be built for one card or the other but more of take it by chance. The article said in places id was kinda partnered with Nvidia but when Nvidia built their card for the Doom 3 demo, they just released a new demo. So the way i see it is that nvidia designed the 6800 for doom 3 not doom 3 was designed for the 6800. Maybe i'm just completely wrong here but thats what i got from it.

Loser 1769 brings up another good point. Each top of the line card will run the games fine. where they will lose is on benchmarks by a few fps. I have never really cared about fps as long as cards are close. I care more about price myself.

I agree entirely. It's easier to be proud of something tangible (like money left in the bank after buying the card!) than FPS. Though I suppose this doesn't hold true for everyone.

Well I'm playing Doom 3 on a FX5200 an I'm fine. The game is just as scary and looks good enough for me anyway. But there really needs to be a third company that is both really strong in open gl games and directx games. If that happens who knows how good cards can get and how much cheaper they can get.

My 9500pro is still "doing yeoman's duty". I never expected it to make more than 2 years but now it looks like 3 or more.
I'll replace it with a shader 3.0 card when I can afford one.
How odd, the mid-range card ATI discontinued is the best bargain deal for new games.

some people have to realize that alot of this is a marketing ploy. one man has an idea, and others profit from it as well. a hardware manufacturer comes out with some new equipment, then the game developers say you need it to play their game.
