Question on Doom3 vs video card.

Everyone talks about being able to run Doom3 and on which video card. My question is if I would go with a Radeon 9800 for around $150 bucks would I be able to run Doom at a decent speed at a lower quality. Or do I have to spring for the $400 6800 card to run it at a decent speed.

Right now I have a 64 mb gainward card. the picture is ok but the speed is a litte jerky.

Thanks,

You should be able to run it fine on a 9800. I believe those are around the same as a 9600 Pro performance wise. I have a 9600 Pro and I run it at 800x600 on high settings at ~40-50 fps. If you can spare the extra $40-50 you should spring for the 9800 Pro.

I also am interested in this.

I have the lowest card listed on requirements (Ti200). Mine is slow, choppy and only works with the simplest of video settings. Low Low and Low.

A 9800 Pro is a much better performer than the 9600. The 9800 Pro was top of the line when it came out. The 9600 was mid range. The 9800 Pro is also a 256bit while the 9600 Pro is 128 bit. The 9800 Pro should run Doom III decently.

Thumbs up Check This Out!

Hey, I'm playing Doom 3 on my homebuilt PC with all settings MAXXED OUT and it plays great! I've only got an ATI 9600XT running at stock speeds but I've got 2GB of ram and when you choose Ultra High Quality graphics settings, it warns you that it will need to use approx. 500MB of memory for graphics processing. 500MB is a LOT of memory but since I've got 2GB, I can spare it. So that helps the game play really good on my system. Also, I just read in the latest MaximumPC magazine some tips and tricks to make Doom3 play better. They said to enable VSync in the "advanced" video options. So I tried it and it helped a lot. It stops that "visual tearing". They also said to go into your videocard's control panel and enable triple buffering in Open GL. I tried to do this on my PC but couldn't find what the heck they were talking about. Try it!

I have a 9800 Pro and run it on high settings and it runs fine. I have 1 gig of memory also. You should do fine with a 9800.

Same here but with half the memory. The ATI Catalyst 4.9 drivers should help performance on the Radeon 9800 cards.

I was talking about the 9800. The stock 9800 Non-Pro version is about the same as a 9600 Pro performance wise.

I played it at decent settings with a 9200. If a 9800 Pro is suspect to equal performance, then that is sad.

No need to dish out the $400 for the 6800 in my opinion. I can run it fine at medium settings with a 9600 Pro and 512MB of RAM, so you should be more than okay with the 9800 Pro.

400 dollars is a 6800 GT which is considered a high end card right now. if you are looking to play all of the newest games on very nice settings, i would get the 6800GT. The 9800Pro is a higher mid end card and will perform nicely with some eyecandy turned off. If you have the extra money to spend, pop for a 400 dollar card. If you want a 200 dollar solution, get the 9800Pro not a normal one IMO
