Help with game resolutions

Is there anyway you can change a games resolutions before you actually start the game up as I just finished my new build but I only have a standard 15" monitor which can only go up to 800x600 and so far the only games that I can get to work are doom 3 and commandos 3. I will be upgrading my monitor but it won't be till the start of the new year as far as I know so any help is appreciated.

Usually games default to 800x600 when you first start them up. What games are you having problems with?
