Counter Strike Source NOOB question

Can some one explain to me this counter strike source stuff.

1. Is it a stand alone game?
2. Do you need the original CS installed?
3. Do you need HL2 installed?
4. I keep hearing and reading that it's released via Steam. Is that it? No retail Box?
5. Do you need Steam installed to play it?

I'm just a little bit confused. I'm planning on buying the HL2 collectors edition and I keep reading that CS:Source is the HL2 multiplayer. Is that true?

And what the hell is DOD, Blue Shift and Team Fortress are those Mods for CS? Or are they other single player games or seperate Multiplayer games.

I told I'm a Noob.

1.Yes Its standalone, and its the only game thats been released
2.No because its a stand-alone game. May need HL2 Source installed in the future.
3.No because its a stand-alone game, or yes in some HL2 bundles maybe.
4.Yes, its been released and is availible by Steam. There is no retail box because you download all the necessary files to play and install the game via Steam which shouldn't take long.
5.Yes, you need Steam to play it. I think all Values' games will require Steam, might help to cut down on pirated copies of their games, but people always come up with new ways to avoid it in time.

Counter-Strike and Half-life are different. CS started as a mod for HL and soon gained popularity. It became popular enough to find its way as a stand-alone game that can be bought on store shelves.

What made HL so popular was not only its great single player and innovative attributes, what made HL last so long was its Mods.
Day of Defeat, DOD, and TeamFortress were also mods for HL(Correct me if I'm wrong plz)

BlueShift and opposing force were just expansions for the single player adventure for HL. BlueShift instead of the role as Gordan, you get to be a security guard in BlackMesa. Opposing Force, you get to play as Sheperd something, as a force that was supposed to elimate the threats in BlackMesa I think.

THe game physics are greatly improved. If another player or you yourself can get somewhere in the map or it looks like you can get on a roof you can. The hitboxes work better for those of us that bother to run, stop, aim, shoot. The Flahs bangs now affect your sound too. They are even more annoying than before especially if you play with headphones. Talk about pain. The graphics are updated. Mainly the game physics and graphis are updated. Its the same CS just revamped with the Source engine. The beta I played was sweet, but you have to get all the die hard CS people to switch or valve will have to phase out 1.6 to get everyone playing. I know the server that I am on will be switching as soon as all the clan members have HL2. It comes free with HL2 I dont think it is a retail game yet. Everything that I have seen for it has it bundeled with HL2

The graphics engine is greatly improved. Realistic water, shadows, particles, blood spatter, etc.

I've played it a bit and the common gripe is that the aiming isn't true (prolly because the hax0rs haven't programmed their bots yet).

You can download Steam and purchase (or use your HL2 coupon) and with that you get CS:Source, Half-life 1, Counterstrike, Opposing force, DOD, Deathmatch Classic, Codename Gordon, Riccochet, Team Fortress Classic and the HL2 preloaded. It took me about 4 hours to DL all of the above.

So far I have no problems with the Steam server. It downloads the latest patches, maps, etc. Whenever you log on. I just wonder what will happen if their server ever crashes.

I have heard the gripes about hte aim too. THe aim is not messed up when you are mid range to close. THe aim is affected when you are trying to hit people accross the map with a M4. No biggy they will fix it. It's been four years and they stiil have problems in CS like SKY walking in Dust.

If it's a single player game, how do you play without going online?

I could be wrong but it looks to be a multiplayer game to me. I don't see any single player options and with "Find Server" and "Create Server" as play options I'd say ya gotta be online or over a LAN to play.

I have not played it so I really don't know, I've only loaded the play menu.

DoD Day of Defeat is a WWII mod for Halflife and its WAY better than any of the Medal of Honor games that come out. I've been playing it on and off for like 2 years now inbetween whatever mmorpg I was playing.

Sky walking in Dust is gone since 1.6 came out.
