Hey, the latest issue of Gamestar magazine came with a CD that teaches an awesome and pretty easy Doom 3 tweak. I tried it and I truly feel that it made a big difference in gameplay. I play at 1024x768 @ high and ultra high settings with a PC equipped w/ a P4 3.0C, 2GB RAM and an X800XT PE. Before this tweak the game played pretty smooth but in large areas and when attacked by multiple monsters it would sometimes slow down and get a little choppy. Now it plays much smoother, nearly perfect. I think that as long as you're on a half decent PC and not an old piece of crap that this should work for you. Here's the tweak.
1. Open your Doom 3 folder and open the file DoomConfig.cfg using a text editing program like WordPad. 2. Scroll down about two thirds of the way and look for "seta image_cacheMegs "20"" and change 20 to a higher number like 32, 64, 128, or 256. I set mine to what my video card's VRAM is which is 256. 3. Save your changes and close everything and play. 4. For possibly even more performance you can also change the numbers in the lines both above and below that line. You can go back in and change "use cache "0"" to use cache "1". And you can change cache minK from 200 to 10X what you changed the 20 too. So for example, My DoomConfig.cfg file originally looked like this: use cache "0" seta image_cacheMegs "20" cache minK "200" I changed the "0" to "1", the "20" to "256" (my video card's vram), and changed the "200" to 2560 (10X 256 or whatever you make the above figure). Anyway, it's very easy to do. Give it a shot and let me know how it worked for you. My gameplay is waaay better.
