That is kinda crazy, but any one with a modded xbox should not be stupid enough to play online

But you should not be punished if you had to replace a faulty DVD drive. They should only do checks on obvious things such as HDD mods and BIOS mods. Replacing a faulty DVD drive is no reason for a lifetime ban.
