splat HL2 wont even install

I purchased a copy of HL2 on friday and tried to install it on 2 diffrent comps and neither dvd-rom drive would recognize the disc or I would get an error message that would say somthing along the lines of "cannot read media from source" or "corrupt installation file". I figured this was a bad disc so I took it back and got a replacement. This time both of my comps would read the discs but I cant install the game. Either it will say "preparing to install" and the comp will hang forever or the comp just freezes up. This problem is not on steams website and I cannot figure out what to do....any suggestions??

Can I download it for free since I have already purchased it? Do I just need to enter my CD key somewhere to download it?

I believe you can just download it. To install the Game, though, you will need to insert your CD Key. The Client is free - the game isn't.

Just go here , download it and when you make your acount it should ask you for your CD key, you can also go in the game browser and click on "register a product I already own" then it will download HL2
