when me and my son play dune, the game really slows down. I have our two comps networked through a router and they are hard wired. when he stops playing my game really speeds up. Does anyone know why the game doea not play at normanl speed instead of so slow??

Can you provide the specs of both machines?
And also more detail about the what you mean by 'hard wired', just a bit more detail on the configuration (cabling, speeds etc) if you are able. Cheers |

One machine is a HP Pavilion 7840, 766 celeron cpu, 30 gb hard drive and 200 mb of ram. The other is one I built with assus p4c800 deluxe M.B., 2.4 cpu with hyper pipeline threading, 1gb of ram, and a radeon 9800 pro vid csard with 256 k of ram. The router is a D-link and they are networked with cat5 cables.

i would think its because your's is 3 times the speed of the other one so more then likely when your playing your game your playing at his speed. and when you get back to yours alone your much faster.

Sounds like that is the case, 3 times and then some! I think your computer would be slowing itself down to handshake with the other computer so you can both play at the same speed, it is only going to be as fast as your slowest machine.
When you are both playing network it would have to be taking more toll than if your were playing the game single player aswell. so when he stops your computer breathes a sigh of relief and gets back to its normal speed. Might pay to grab the game box and see if your slower machine is behind the recommended specs of the game, see what can be modified, you might be able to get more RAM in there and/or a better graphics card, but I don't know with your set up how restrictive the HP Pavillion is going to be, to upgrade. Good luck though! |

How do you play? Co-op or DM? Do you have a server setup on one of your machines or are you connecting outside to the internet to play? Are you sure both computers are running at full bi-directional 100mbs?

I do not know what you mean by co-op or DM. But i think the others may be right about the other machine being so slow. I did try to upgrade the hp, and could not, that's why i built mine. Thanks for your help, guess I will just have to build my son a better comp.
