Resolution for gaming

hey guys i was just wondering if there is a "standard" for a resolution for video games. like 1280x720. is it pretty much given that the higher the resolution the nicer the graphics? i was just toying around with it and i was hoping for some input.
thanks

i usually only like the "square" sized proportions, 800x600, 1280x1024, and sometimes 1280x768. i wish i could use 1600x1200 but my monitor doesn't support that far. i usually play at 1280x1024 and i don't see frame increases when i go lower.

Since I've had my 6800GT I've been playing all my games at 1600x1200. Going that high you usually don't need AA and everything looks great. In Far Cry I tried a lower resol. but the trees looked like crap, so I upped the resol. and made all the trees fully drawn in the distance (forget the code for it) and Far Cry rocks.

But in multiplayer it's a differ story. It is really hard to see what ppl type in Raven Shield Multi!

There is a way to get around that you know, though sometimes it doesn't always work.

If you remember, pm me please. I'm tired of distant trees popping in and being made of 2 big polygons.

As for the original question, I play most games at 1064x768 except for UT2k4 which I play at 1280x1024. I prefer to crank all the other effects to the highest level and adjust my resolution to get a better framerate instead of having high rez and low settings.

I've always used 1024x768 in all the games I play. Seems to be the sweet spot.

I usually use 1024x768 because I don't want to torture my CRT, but then I put all the goodies on high and crank up FSAA and AF all the way.

Forcing resolutions the monitor can't render, either with windows or some 3rd party app.

Each monitor has its limits. You can't "OC" them, per say.

no, i mean my monitor can't support over 1280x1024. like my nVidia drivers allow me to go up to 2048x1536 but anything over 1280x1024 and my monitor gives me the resolution not supported message and everything goes black.
