Half Life 2 question??
I've been reading some of the posts, and was wondering,,, is this game multiplayer only??? I don't want it if it is because I don't have, will never have, broadband where I live. Dialup is out of the question for multi.play.

Half Life 2, as it is, is a single player game. The multiplayer version is Half-Life Deathmatch which was made available in the passed few weeks.

you will still need an internet connection to play single player. and if you still have dial up it will takes hours just to play single player.

You need to connect to register the cd-key for the game. Once you've done that, you never need to connect again.

Hey Suitcase you are in central VA , you could get DSL.
But to try to register your key will take a loooooong time with dialup. OH yea one more thing. With HL2 you use STEAM to verify your game. You do have to have an internet connection when you play the game. This is what I understand.

You don't need steam to play. Only register. Once you register that first time, you don't need to connect to play.

Now about half life. Am I correct in thinking that the game best buy sells, Half Life 2, when installed on my pc, must then be activated (registered?) with steam, and then I no longer need the internet to play it?? And,, why would it take sooo long to activate it? |

This is correct, quoted from the QRC "A Steam account is required to play Half Life2 and an internet connection is required to create and use your Steam account. During installation you will be prompted to create your STeam account and validate your CD Key, once this is complete you can play Half Lige2. An "Offline-Mode" will also be available if the "rememebr my password" box is checkde on the Steam login screen Offline Mode will not be available and an internet connection will be reuired if: 1) You do not select the "Rememebr my passowrd" option on the login screen 2) You choose to login as a different user 3) You check "Don't save account information on this computer' on the Steam Account Settings screen" And,, why would it take sooo long to activate it? Lots of traffic going back and forth to validate - after the hack that stole the code I imagine their paranoia level went to 11 (on a scale of 1 to 10)

Steam is really a pain- I haven't heard anything nice about. Let's all hope other games don't go this route. (If the game is registered and validated through Steam, then why do you need the CD in the drive to play it?).
One nice attribute about Steam is that it will automatically start updating even if you are playing another game- this has the nice effect of slowing down the other game (i.e., Far Cry) to the point of being unplayable. In fact- I just bought Chronicles of Roddick- think I'll play that instead of something that really gets my Steamed. |

I like it. I think although it does crash and lose my CS settings every so often, it keeps all my games together and hasn't done anything else bad so far.

Right, besides crashing, losing settings, and causing other games to slow down- what's not to like?

I have not had any issues with it other than it downloading stuff, and the fix is easy, take it out of the startup folder, when I want to play I turn it on, when I am done off it goes.

I did get the game. I wasn't sure so I just connected to the net and then began installing the game. It stopped and I filled out the form and registered the key and it went on and added CS icon and steam icon along with half life 2 to my desktop. First time I played it wouldn't start till I connected but since then I just clik the HL2 icon and then clik the offline button and play. What a game, I'm totally impressed with everything about it. No more endless hallways and doors to open. Mindless AI that react the same all the time. One scene I watched as the AI looked for the way I was getting on top of the building. They couldn't follow me but it was scary watching them milling around, like they were trying to figure out how to get up there. CREEPY man
