Smile Gamer Spends 26,500 on virtual land

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4104731.stm

The article might speak for its self.

I wounder if that games any good. Seems like a fishy gimick kind of a game. But its got its own stock market which sounds really fun.

He'll be the next Donald Trump, he's buying land cheap now to sell later for a higher price, simple economics (or would it be simple real estate?). Anywho, if that game goes down, bye-bye investment.

I would like to see follow-up on this in a few weeks or months. Are other gamers actually spending their cash on the items within that game? With 200,000 people registered, could it be that he'll actually make his money back over time? Amazing...

Reached a new plateau?? Doesn't he mean level??
And I'm ashamed it was an Aussie, let alone a 22 year old. It seems the most random idea, someone has to be losing money. Maybe he should hit up Coke for sponsorship, and offer to put a massive billboard on his island... I reckon they might go for it

Ha! I think you may be on to something. If he owns that virtual space... the possibilities are endless!

I say it's a gamble, but who knows. The only thing I'd be afraid of is what you guys are saying -- what happens when the sequel comes out and everyone switches over to it? He better be an economics whiz, stay on the pc 24/7, and buy/sell fast if he wants to earn back all his cash.

Who knows, he may be onto something here. Only time will tell. You're right, I'd like to see a follow-up on this too.

I don't think he'll lose much money if/when "part 2" comes out. It's not like Star Wars Galaxies or Jump to Lightspeed, these people use real money. If there is a guy that paid thousands of dollars for a virtual island there are probably others that have bought hundreds or other thousand dollar amounts as well. They aren't going to just get up and leave. (Probably) If there is a part two to this game it might be somthing like an expansion pack that just adds more "worlds" or somthing.

A fool and his money.

I find this particularly outrageous, considering the amount of people in the world that tonite will go to sleep with an empty belly.

It reminds me of Sim city, and i don't know about you but i could never get a good population going in that game. I always got bored and destroyed it with disasters, hope that doesn't happen to him.

Well said NK!
Instead of crapping it away (pardon my expression), maybe he should have done something honerable or charitable with his cash. At least he would have been helping someone. If a small percentage of people's money that was used to do moronic things like this was used to help people, the world would be a much better place.

Just my opinion,
Stryker

That would be fantastic, of course.
One can hope I suppose.
