CS: Source questions

With HL2 being one of the greatest games ever, I'd like to try CS: Source. I have a few quesitons on this.

First off, I'm pretty sure that I stink compared to the majority of people that play. Is there some sort of ranking system, or do I have to go against the best and the worst at the same time?

Also, how do you join a game? I'm not quite sure how to do this, and I've been afraid of jumping into a game uninvited. I'd also like to play alone against and with bots, how would you do that?

Last of all, it's free, correct? I purchased the retail version of the game, so I have HL2, CS: Source and HL2: DM. I just want to make sure I don't get banned due to ignorance! Thanks!

yes it's free. there isn't a ranking system per se but there is leagues if you ever decide to join. all games w.o passwords are considered public and you just select a server you like with a good ping and a nice map and press join.

Don't get discouraged if you get your butt kicked. Just try another server. There are servers with new players, intermediate and elite players. I tend to avoid the elite players. You can kind of tell if they get headshot after heatshot after headshot. Just quit the server and just join another one. No big deal.

You can also go into favorites and add an ip. I am an admin of the darv server and we are pretty accomidating to new guys. the ip is 69.90.113.70:27015. Just ad that when the server pops up in your list double click on it and your will go there if it is not full. Look for Jester2k thats me.

I call that "cheating" - my first few days playing CS1.5 I think it was, I was perplexed at how good these guys were on one server. Little did I know until someone pointed it out while looking as a spectator (soon after they were banned).

Really, after playing Half Life 2, you should be on a decent footing for CS:S. Remember that as CS:S is a more demanding game than many other online multiplayer games including it's predecessor CS1.6 by a considerable margin, low ping is important. Be sure to turn down your graphics to the extent that they will run quite smoothly...and be sure to try several servers. Happy gaming
