Half Life 2 Problem

Does anyone know how to get rid of the white lines seen in the picture below. The screen can get really blurry sometimes and even unplayable. I have the latest drivers for my 6600GT installed and I turned down the settings but none of that helped.

On top of that, the quality of picture on there is terrible for Half Life 2. First, be sure you are in DirectX 9.0 mode. Then, reinstall the original drivers that came with the graphics card - the CD. Is this only evident during gaming?

The screenshot is distorted so the image quality appears much worse than it actually is. The only problem is the white lines. When you look at them in the game everything goes blurry. I am in DirtectX 9 mode and I only have this problem in Half-Life 2. All of my other games (Far Cry, Counter Source, Half-Life 2 Deathmatch, etc.) work fine. After I installed Half-Life 2 on my computer today, I already have it on my other one, I played it and there were no problems for the first few levels. I never installed the drivers from the cd that came with my video card. I just downloaded the newest ones off of Nvidia's website. I do remember an error after a loading point in the game and it said something about rebuilding. I cannot remember exactly what it was, but this problem with the white lines bagan about an hour later so maybe they are not even related.

The water appears not to be rendering. Those lines are the verticies for the water face.

What are your system specs?

Make sure you have DX 9.0c and the most recent drivers for your video card?

Suggestion: Turn up AA to at least 2x or 4x. That will greatly improve image quality and get rid of jagged lines.

I have both DirectX 9.0c and the latest drivers for my video card. I have tried AA on all of the available settings it still looks the same. It is mostly water that does not render but there other things.

Have you been online to download the most recent updates for the game?

How do I revert back to the DirectX 8 setting? In the game, the only option is DirectX 9. Shouldn't steam automatically download the latest updates?

Steam should be automatically downloading updates. As of now, it looks to be a software problem. Make sure you have DX9c (aforementioned?) and reinstall the graphical drivers from nVIDIA. I don't think HL2 can be blamed too much here, as we all do get the same copy from Steam's server.

You may have the DX 9.0c software but if I recall correctly you need dx7+ hardware(video card), to play the game properly. Go into the advanced video settings on HL 2 and it'll tell you what hardware DX ver. you're card is running, if its 6-. Then you need a new card. Period.

This really doesn't help your problem, but you can change to different DX modes.
Hit on the console hey ~ tilde and type "mat_dxlevel --" in the console. Don't use quotes and replace -- with the DirectX version you want. You can use 70,80,81,or 90. Example - mat_dxlevel 90.

But of course lowering the level lets the visuals take a major downgrade.
Make sure you have the latest drivers, and the latest Steam updates.

You may want to try updating your chipset drivers.

Now I am having even more problems. In addition to the white lines where stuff is not being rendered, some of the walls are checkered purple and black.

I would suggest trying to uninstall the game and try re-installing, but I know how painful installing it is and I haven't heard of anyone else who has done it.. Where did you download the drivers for your card? what site?
