Good Online Third Person Shooter?

I'm looking for good online multiplayer third person shooter for my soon-to-be new PC (See below) I've been playing SOCOM II for the PS2 for quite some time and I've had just about enough of all the lag, disconnects, and rank^ BS
Of course fun gameplay is my primary concern, but good graphics don't hurt either I really like playing with a controller too, so if you can reccomend one I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

i play sof2, ut2004, cod, cod-uo mainly play deathmatch games. and on the controller once you use a mouse and keyboard its hard to go back to a hand controller.
so when your to test the waters i run servers for each one of those games.

I'm not too familiar with PC game abbreviations, been console gaming for a looonng time because my PC budget has always had to go toward laptops
Would you be so kind as to translate?

Thanks!

I play a lot of Return to Castle Wolfenstein! It is quite a fun game where you can choose to be on the Allied side or Axis side of the war. From there you can choose to be a Soldier, Engineer, Medic or Lieutenant. Each of those classes has a different ability and can do different things. It is quite fun actually! I have been know to play for hours without noticing the time go by!!!

Look into it! The game has been out for some time now so it is fairly cheap to get at places such as Best Buy.

Half Life 2. It's first person, as opposed to thrid person like you requested, but is one of the BEST games out there period and comes with HL2 Deathmatch, and Counter Strike: Source.

even if it isnt a thrid-person shooter i highly recommend either Counter-strike, Counter-Strike:Source, or Half-Life2 is you want some good shooting action. I would recommend UT2004 but my new computer isnt together so i cnat play it yet(just bought it)!!!

First-Person shooters are whats best on PCs in my opinion. But you might like to try Max Payne 2 if you haven't already on a console <--third person shooter
Thats the first third person shooter that comes to mind for me

But Half-Life 2 is an incredible game, and Valve did a great job with creating the source engine.

Third-Person + Mulitplayer = No Good

Can't really think of any multiplayer 3rd person but I do remember a quote from Halo when they tested 3rd person multiplay:

"We tried to play mulitplayer on this thing once and it just became impossible.... you just can't aim for crap."

There actually is a program that lets you play Halo PC, Demo, and Custom Edition in third person. It works quite well once you up your fov to around 100

You'll be looking at fisrt person rather than third for a decent shooter on PC.

My money goes on Call Of Duty United Offensive. Can't go wrong with that. Return To Castle Wolfenstein is where I started and is still fun. I think you can actually download it for free (legitimately) though someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Just got Half-Life 2 and Counter Strike: Source (which comes free with it) is a good shooter but just doesn't seem as much 'fun' as COD. PC is the best place to be for online shooters though, you should enjoy most of the games mentioned in this thread...

I really like SOCOM because it's a modern tactical team based shooter. It's an amazing game but I'm just ready for something new. I'll give counterstrike a try for sure, but I have a question about downloading from steam; do I need to be connected to the internet every time I want to play? That just seems like it could be a bit more inconvenient at times than popping in a DVD when I'm just playing single player Half-Life. Also, what if I need to reinstall?

Thanks!

for pc games, in my opinion, first person shooters are the way to go, well, if you want a shooter that is. third person games are really more for games that have more story than action, and therefore don't really require a whole lot of aiming and what not. I still can't wait to play DOOM 3, which is a first person game. Isn't Unreal third person? that is a pretty good game, for a shooter. I guess the differences really do not matter, because regardless of what pov you have, all you do is line up a targeting reticle (sp?) with a target and give them the business.

By the way, UT2004, four words, triple barreled rocket launcher. alternate fire cycle all three barrels and let them fly! It is my fav weapon

Steam has an offline mode. It's not necessary to be connected to the internet, but it is required for the one time activation. You might want to try Max Payne 2 , its only around 10 dollars. But read a review it might not be what you're looking for.

Now I've heard that and I've also heard you have to log in each time you play.

Yeah man First person shooter games is where the good games are.

I personally like some of the older games, like the Medal of Honor series and counter-strike.

Some of the new games have too many hackers, and it just takes the fun out of it.

hope this helps

WOOT! Glad to hear the Return To Castle Wolfenstein recommendations in the thread! I've been on RTCW for 3 years. Good to see an oldie but goodie still kicking arse.

UT200x as well

I played the COD UO Demo. Very cool.

Far Cry is good as well.

The above are all FIRST person shooters. As far as third person ???

Talking

I dont think there are that many third person shooters out there that are worth a darn. Everything has mainy moved to the first person market. I play Battlefield 1942 (only play online -- they threw in a single player part at the end pretty much so that it would sell -- it's designed for online play) Call of Duty is the only game in recent years that my father has played. He hates computer games, but this one he got hooked on and played it from beginning to end. He even beat it before I could. He got me the United Offensive expansion pack for Christmas so he could play it. Actually as I type this he's on there playing "just one more level then I'm getting off -- I promise..." I might never get my computer back.

I got Doom 3 and if you've got the pc to make it look nice go for it. It is a straight shoot spawns of hell gore fest -- frightfully fun.

Everyone says Half-Life 2 beats them all and I don't disagree -- I just don't have the money right now to go out and get it.
