CS: Source question
Can anybody tell me if there are any other game types in CS: Source? At the moment it's just 1 round = 1 death. This means sometimes waiting for 3 or 4 mins for the next round if you get shot up early on (quite regular for a CS noob like me!) I'm finding it hard to get into because of this. Is there a TDM with regular respawns or anything?

There's DM, "Plant the bomb", and "rescue the hostages"
Once you're killed, you're out for the round. If you're finding that the players on the server you're on are too hard, jump to another server. Also, knowing the map well helps *a lot*

Yeah, it's verynormal when beginning CS to die early and a lot. I would suggest getting good with the M4 and The AK, both are powerful and accurate guns. Learn how the different guns move when fired, and practice headshots.

It's the headshots that are getting me. I can unload a full clip into their kevlar and they just shoot me in the head.
Looks like it's practice I need then. Or perhaps I should stick to COD UO which is more fun as I can (just about) hold my own, and you get to respawn in a reasonable amount of time on most game types. Thanks for the tips |

Don't give up just because you're dying! It took me a LONG time to get good at CS 1.6, and I died literally hundreds of times. A few tips i can offer are crouch OFTEN and aim high. As soon as I see someone, I crouch down, and shoot in 2-3 round bursts ( I CAN NEVER STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF SHOOTING IN BURSTS ENOUGH). Crouching when shooting makes for more accurate shots, and the recoil factor is toned down when not moving. Also, crouching makes yourself smaller, hence harder to hit at a distence.
Also, weapon choice is a big factor in the game. Seriously, I can only play with about 5-6 different guns. It is always a good idea to be good with a pistol, an smg, and a rifle. you don't have to be an expert with every gun (I suck at sniper rifles!). Once you find a gun you like, stick with it and become good with it. don't get a different gun every round. For CT, I reccommend the desert eagle, or you default pistol, the mp5, the m4, and the bullpup. If you are terrorist, go with the dual berettas, ak-47, galil, mp5, or kreig. You also want to MAKE SURE you buy armor and a helmet every round. Flashbangs are also very effective if you use them correctly. For the first round of a game or when you have little money, i suggest buying just a desert eagle and some ammo, or sticking with your default pistol and buying armor. Its all in your style of play! CS is a great game with a great community. If you have trouble there is usually one person on a server who is helpful and will answer any question. Remember- aim high, crouch down, shoot in bursts. Hope that helps, /sd |

I'll give it a shot. I don't like to give up as it seems like a great game, I just think it's the hardest online shooter to get into especially after playing COD, where you can look down the sights and headshot someone 200 metres away.
Having problems with COD at the mo though (think someone's nicked my CD Key) so it looks like I'll have more time to practice CS! |

Being in CAL i can give you a few hints for source.
1. Manage your money. If your team looses the first round save the second and third round so that you can buy the wepons you need to actually kill people. 2. Move-stop-aim-shoot-move. This is a good tactic to learn. Ducking is only good if you are near a wall or have cover other wise your head and chest are actually more exposed. If you are moving you become a harder target if you stop then aim and shoot your aim is more acurate and more likely to hit dead on. Move again. Don't just stand there if you missed move and reposition. Don't spray-and-pary. Use short bursts let out 2 or 3 bullets then let the cross hair resize. Move side to side in short distances while that happens. 3. Listen and walk. I can't tell you how many times i have won a scrimage for my team because the other team was blundering around and being loud. I jump out from a corner and get the kill because i heard them. 4. Granades. Buy them. You can use the FLashes and Smokes for cover and the HE granade can kill a low health person. Save your HE granades till the middle of rounds when most likely people have damage on them. 5. Jump thru doors. People like to snipe and camp outside doors. When you go charging thru on jump thru the door you become a harder target. 6. TEAM WORK. Stick with your team. The better players stick together and protect one and other. Look at the score and follow the guy with the best score. 7. Spectate good players. Watch and learn. While you are dead watch the better players and play like they do. 8. Call for back up. If you are bogged down by 4 terrorists you cant take them by yourself. Call for back up and wait for it to get there. Try and hold them off and damage them but dont go for the kills. 9. Get good with all the weapons. Know who they behave and work. The AK is acurate and deadly on the first round but the 2 and third are unreliable at best. THe m4 is accurate up to the 3rd bullet but less powerfull. The sniper rifles take time to aim. The other reason you want to be good with all weapons is on save rounds when you have no money or weapons you can pick up those of the dead people and be proficient with what others have bought. 10. Relax breath and have fun. To many people get too serious. They get mad and frustrated and start breathing wierd. This screws up your concentration thus messing up your aiming and ability to spot an enemy. Just have fun if you die alot joke it off and continue having fun. The more you play and the more often you play the better you get. I used to be a weekend warrior and sucked. NOw i play at least an hour a day and i got 10 times better. I hope this all helps you this is the general stuff of this game. Look around on the net there are some good sites to go to www.gotfrag.com/cs you can find demos and hints there. Look around and ask people to help you. If someone yells at you when you dn't know how to do something or where to go just tell them instead of yelling gimme some tips. There are alot and I mean ALOT of trolls in this game just be patient and if you have any more question just PM me

Ok, well most of that was contradicting what i had to say.
But its all good. It's all in your style of play. ![]() /sd Btw, I actually crouch down to make my gun more accurate, and for me it works. Again, its all in how you play. Last edited by swampdonkey; 01-13-2005 at 01:46 PM. |

The accuracy factor between stopping and crounching is not enough to make me miss a shot so I only crouch if i am trying to hide. I didnt contradict anything you said i just elaborated on alot and added more. The techniques i posted have been proved thru the life of CS.

Thanks for all the tips. PCmech forum as helful as ever, cheers.
I think I'll have a session at the weekend and try to adapt my style of play. Just out of interest, do any of you guys play COD UO? Is it just me or is CS harder to master? Without wanting to open up a can of worms of course! |

Yep. I don't hold anything against you or anything, we play differently, and of course I'm sure you have played longer.
Oh and by the way I kinda misread the title of this thread. I was actually talking about my experiences with CS 1.6. Sorry for the mix-up. /sd |

Hey, I've never played Counter-strike source, but I have played the original counter-strike and COD. I could never get the hang of counter-strike -- I would shoot someone dead in the chest I thought then be ripped apart by a burst of gunfire a second later. In COD I became very good for a short while (while involved in a clan) and practiced daily. Counter-strike I just gave up on after dying instantly everytime I tried to play. I guess what I'm getting at is you just need to stick with it and keep trying. If I had hung in there with counter-strike I'm sure I would have become better. It just takes time and a little dedication.
I tried playing COD the other day and got my behind whooped -- I saw many people doing exactly what I used to do -- I just wasn't as fast as I used to be. Good luck and happy hunting.
