Purchased the HL2 Silver Package from Steam....
Now what? I purchased the package and all of the games showed up in the My Games list. I clicked on Half Life:Source because I want to start with the original. It took about 50 minutes to download then loaded the main menu. I clicked New Game and now it's been at the "Loading... Initializing Game Data" screen for over an hour. It is two notches away from being complete. It has been that way for the entire hour. The internet activity light is on solid and the hard drive is going. What is it doing?

I'd say let it do what it's doing. It's loading all the files for a massive program onto your system. I believe initializing means it's actually loading the contents of the game onto your system.

Well, it wasn't loading files. It was frozen. Right after I posted that I noticed the mouse wasn't there. I ended it through the task manager and restarted it and it works fine. I waited an hour and a half for no reason.
Oh well. All of the games in the package are working and I'm loving it.

So Hi Ho,
Glad to hear Half Llife 2 is up and running. How is it doing on that Ti Series card? I am looking oout for the retail package. Steam is impossible here, with my incredible :-( internet connection speeds. NPP

It's running great. I don't know what the frame rates are but it runs perfectly smooth with all the settings maxxed out. I know I'm missing out on some eye candy especially when it comes to water (see HERE) but it still looks absolutely amazing. Gameplay is excellent too. Definetly worth it. HERE are some screenshots I've taken. I'm running in software DX9 mode. Maybe I'm not missing out on the water. After comparing, I'd say the water in my screens looks a lot like the DX9 water in the Anandtech comparison.

So do you think I might get away with it on my poor old GeforceFX 5600?

I'm not sure. In the Anandtech article they said there was a 65-68% performance hit in DX9 on the FX cards. However, It might work OK in DX8 mode.

If you tried downloading the game and retrieving any updates yesterday, or even today you've just witnessed the Valves' servers near tneir carrying capacity. The CSS Bots and updates were released yesterday, took about 20 minutes to download about 10 MB of content.
After the game is started, you hit the loading screen why do they have in game updates?

If you own a package from steam, you can redownload HL2 on your new computer. If you don't, you just backup the game files through Steam and open the backup on your new computer.

About purchasing the silver package, you have to buy it through Steam which I linked to earlier (yes the link is working). It is a program that you download and it is used to purchase and run Valve games. When you buy a package through Steam you do not get a CD. Everything is downloaded from the net. |
