Doom 3 opinions
Well, I just got Doom3 for my Xbox to try out. My first impressions: why isn't there split screen co-op or multiplayer? Why did they make the PDA so clunky? Game plays much choppier then on my computer. What did you guys think about Doom3? I like it a lot for the PC and I havn't beaten it yet but it's keeping me playing. If Doom1 and Doom2 weren't included on the limited collecters edition disc, I would probably sell this to one of my friends. If you played Doom3 for PC and are thinking of getting it for Xbox, it takes some getting used to for the controls.

While maybe this is a xbox thread, it looks like the D3 expansion for the PC is pretty fun. More good D3 action!

Doom 3 is overrated.

Thats what i thought. I mean it did scare me every now and then when something would just pop out of no where but after that it was just basically aim and click. Nothin special in my opinion.

I agreed with Tin on his comment about just the basic run and gun with the pretty graphics. Honestly I do like Doom3 and it is quite exhilarating (I like a good scare and this game can do it), but it is too dark and there isnt enough involved in the game. I really wish they could have made it so that you can be more interactive. One option would be to be able to take control of a group of marines. Even more interaction during gameplay.
The muliplayer part of it is horrible, though. Very, very laggy even with my Cable connection and video cards. Overall I would rate this game at 3 out of 5 stars. AK

Pretty graphics? Where? I could hardly see anything, let alone enjoy or drool over eye candy.

The expansion is supposed to be a lot better than the main game. Less darkness, more action, less of a psychological trip and more about the fun.

You know you could just increase the brightness of the game -- it's in the options menu. I personally dont do this, I just rely on my flashlight and shooting blindly into the dark
but it could be something to try if you're getting frustrated. I didnt think the xbox would be able to really port such a good looking game. It's doom 3 yes, but in the long run it's the graphics which really save it from its repetitive gameplay. Xbox just cant achieve that and unless they've really changed some things then it probably wont be as big. On the other hand it'll sell regardless just because it's doom 3 and it's the only way for console players who lack high end pcs to enjoy it. Oh well. Perhaps Doom 4 (if they continue the game) will take some pointers from Half-Life 2 and get away from those narrow corridors on the spacestation.

i didnt even finish Doom 3...just got too tired of the repetitiveness. IMO the game wasnt worth paying $50 for...i shouldve waited for it to hit the $20 bargain bin. one thing im happy about...the new Wolfenstein coming out that uses the Doom 3 engine. RTCWs gameplay is far superior to Doom 3 in my opinion.

That's true, I haven't finished it either, but I'm going to try. The only reason I bought it was because it came with my 6800 GT card.

I agree. This one was a huge disappoinment considering all the hype there was pushed out about it.

I'm just waiting for Half-Life 2 to get cheaper so I can buy it. The only game I plan on buying in the near future for $50 is going to be Battlefield 2.

Yes Raven Home is ten times scarier than doom 3 ever thought of beeng cause you get to see the badies that can kill you in one swipe swarm at you from a distance

I liked Doom3. Graphics were great, I liked it dark (made it scary), stuff would jump out of no where. When I bought the game, I didn't expect a incrediable story line or puzzles I had to solve during the game. If you thought that then you obviously haven't played any of the previous Doom games. All I wanted was to blast some monsters, get scared, and see some great graphics and hear some sweet sound, which I did.

I have never liked the Doom series, I always found it boring. I didn't even bother with Doom 3, the guy in my corridor beat it in less than a week, and watching him play it didn't inspire me to want to play it.

D3 did get kinda annoying. I eventually started playing with cheats just to finish with the story. However, the expansion is rather capturing, at least so far.
This is why I like it: The grabber gives you alternative options to fight demons and zombies. For soldiers, you have your ammunition but can occassionally throws stuff at them. This allows you to find interesting ways to destroy each baddie. It is scary. Turn out the lights, turn up your surrround sound, and play. Nobody really acknowledges the great effort they put into the sounds of the game. Just standing still you have these weird background noises surrounding you and it adds to the atmosphere. Quickie puzzles: They've added a new feature different than go to this control panel and hit this command to enable this escape route. Now you have to remove power cells from one machine to power up another machine/light source/elevator to get to the next area. Some of the traps try my patience but I've found them to be uniquely choreographed. Bear in mind that I'm maybe 25% of the way through the game so I cannot confirm that the expansion is a lifesaver, but if you were disappointed with D3, don't cut your losses. Go out and pick this up (I got it on sale for $25). Supposedly there are maps which try to escape from the dark narrow hallway stereotype which bored and frustrated D3 players. I don't think I'm too gullible but this game scares me. I usually pick up a game and finish it ASAP. Republic Commando: 1 weekend. Call of Duty United Offensive: 1 weekend. This game just scares me too much that I stop. Half of it is the gameplay, half because of the ominous environment sounds. Back to gameplay: so far the baddies are still predictable. The new blue plasma demon throws plasma at you but you get get throw it back. Watch out because if you catch one and are too slow, he throws more at you. But if there are several and you allow them to get close, it'll slash you to shreds and your shots won't land quickly. Zombies still lunge slowly. Burning zombies (just saw one so far) lunge a bit faster at you. Zombie soldiers fire, hide. fire, hide. fire, hide. If you hear them coming and then hide, they'll fire blindly at where they think you are. Sometimes they'll try to find you and you can blow them away from where you're hiding by a door. But for the most part, predictable baddies so far. There's my D3 ROE 1st portion crash-guide.

For a scary 3D shoot-'em-up Undying beats Doom 3, sound effects-wise, ambient-wise, and most importantly, story-wise. Sure, Undying's graphics are not "superb" like Doom 3 as it uses a 4-year old engine, but what is the point of a super graphics engine if you cannot see whit?
I concur with Jagganath, I never really liked the Doom series. When I got my second computer it came with the shareware version of Doom, and I played it ad nauseam, even when I had no sound card. When I got my sound card I played it even more, but that was because the game had a story and it was also a fresh concept (1st person shooter). I was interested in seeing how the story would unfold, not in mindless shooting, as I am not mindless, mind you. Eventually I got the full version and played it through... once. I lost count of the times I played the first episode, but I only played the second, third, and fourth once. Well, twice, when I got jDoom. That was it. Too repetitive, mindless, story lacking, a complete disappointment. It was also the time Duke Nukem 3D came into town and it booted Doom from my PC and my life real fast. I was interested in Doom 3 when I heard it was being developed, but as soon as I learnt that it was the same game remade (same story, which later the developers admitted became irrelevant after some point early in the game) I was disappointed again. Endure the same mindlessness just because the graphics are "nice"? Forget it. Finally, what's wrong with those guys at id Soft? All the games they produce deal with demons and hell. Why the glorifying of hell and its denizens game after game? Are there not better and more interesting things to make a game about? Take Half-Life as an example. Half-Life was made with the Quake engine. Is it a dark game? Is it a hellish game? If the minds of those developers are as the games they produce, dark, they surely need to get their heads checked. As for me, I am not dumping their garbage into my brain, I do really value my sanity and peace of mind. |

Yeah, Duke 3D was big news back then hey Nuke... unfortunately, it's the only game that's ever given me motion sickness. The other game of about that vintage that I liked was Shadow Warrior: fun and funny, and similar to Duke but without the motion sickness.
