How to make CS:S a higher priority for router?
I keep lagging... I've tried EVERYTHING... reinstalling CS... getting different drivers... removing all the spyware.... NOTHING Works... someone mentioned to me that if I made it so CS: S was a higher priority to my router.... How do I go about doing this? I've got a DLink router...

First, try it without the router to see if the router is actually the problem. I'm almost certain it won't be. The high latiency is most likely a problem coming from your ISP.

Well, when I'm playing I normally have anywhere from 50-120fps.... And my ping is normally from 30-80 most of the time... So even when my ping is at 50... I get these random lag spikes where I'll be shooting at someone... then the screen freezes up... then unfreezes and most of the time I'm dead. And other players can see it too... theyre like "Wow whr2206 you've got some lag problems" etc
Specs Asus a7v8x-x AMD 2500+ Barton 1gb Crucial RAM DDR333 80gb 7200rpm 8mb cache hd Western Digital ATI 9800pro AIW 32x12x40 Lite ON CD Burner Sony Floppy Hercules Gaming Theater XP Using Onboard lan (could this be the problem?) Generic Case w/ Antec 350w psu Windows XP sp2 Normally, when playing I've got sygate firewall running.... The logitech mouse program, AIM, Steam of course, and the volume controls... I've scanned for malware etc... Removed everything I found and I even tried reinstalling CS:S.... didn't seem to help the problem... The thing is that my first CAL match is this monday... and I can't compete with a computer that just randomly lags for 1-4 seconds at any given time.... On some servers its worse than others though... Any suggestions are welcomed... |

It could be just the server you're on, since everything else appears to be fine. (high framerate and low ping).
Everyone is prone to lag spikes occasionally, but if you are experiencing them constantly, switch servers. |

Yeah... But even on a "good" server I still lag... just for shorter periods of time and not as often... But its still there... Oh well... I guess I better hope our scrim server is lag free haha

Check with your ISP about high latiency problems. Mine was having problems, and they finally did something that provided a large improvement.

its not your ping its your choke and loss. type net_graph 3 in the console followed by net_graphpos 2 that will put it in the middle of the screen. Tell me what you average for loos and choke. Then I can take you from there.

I disagree. Source is a good game. Just like in 1.6 in source you have to play with your rates and settings to get eh best connection and best experience. Upon thinking on this further it could be your router that is causing the spikes. How many people are on your router when you play. I know when i compete in scrims and matches i hook the cable modem right up to my computer to get a better connection. If you all need a good config that will get you better fps, ping ect. PM me and I can give them to you or tell you where to find them.

Raskolnikov, I highly suggest that you rephrase your opinions in a less boisterous manner or you will not be lasting long here. |

![]() BTW... I called my ISP... they came and checked everything out and said everything appears to be ok... the only suggestion they had was to buy their "official" cable instead of using what I've got.... Last edited by whr2206; 04-30-2005 at 09:15 PM. |

30 to 80 is not really lagging. 30 is excellent and 80 is 0k. You are doing great if you are averaging 50 and it has nothing to do with your hardware. Your ping has to do with the number of hops it takes to get to a server, and where the server is. If you are playing on a server in your city and getting 50 ping just try reconnecting, your isp went thru to many hops. Now if for some reason you are talking about FPS you might try getting into configing to get your frame rates better. But since you have been talking about loss and choke and router priorities I am going to assume that you are talking about Ping. In net_graph 3 there is a part that says ping. Usually the ping on teh score board is what you are pining to thier server and the ping in net_graph is what thier server is pinging back to you. if your ping is 50 then it is normal for the net_graph to say 100 and you shouldnt be lagging. remember no server is perfect you will lag every once in a while. If you need help with configing I can post a lesson on it.

Yeah, I do need help configing....
I mean.. my ping is OK... I think it has something to do with the game itself.. Because every other online game works for me pretty much flawlessly... 1.6 works good... but CS:S... lags a lot more than it should.... My fps... range from 30(in like really open areas like dust 2 with a lot of people) to 110ish max.... my specs are posted in a post above.. and Ive got the 5.4 Catalyst drivers... I updated to see if it would fix the problem.. but it didnt... |

D-Link has a router made specificaly for this problem. It gives piority to gamers over anyone else using a computer on the same network.
http://games.dlink.com/ I bought one, it does not slow down my gaming when my wife downloads....It slows down her downloads when I am playing though.
