I got it for Christmas and I played it for a couple of days. I pretty much beat it as far as I'm concerned. It's a ton of fun for a couple of hours, but then it just gets repetitive. You do the exact same thing to free each member of your family, it just might get a little harder (not really). You have the same options where ever you go and you pick up the same items throughout the game. In theory it should take you a long time to work your way up to the highest ship in the game, but it took me a day. It's amazing how well a small ship can easily circle the larger ones and take them out. I also didnt like the fact that I could become a baron (its been awhile, I think that's the highest rank) for each country -- that shouldnt happen. The way you get that high is by sinking the country's enemy ships, yet those countries dont seem to care and continue increasing your rank. You just have to alternate between sinking a number of a certain country then going to get promoted, then picking another country for your prey.

I think it's a major step up from Seadogs (if you've never heard of that, then it's practically the same thing but even more linear).

I just bashed the game I know...it will hold your interest for a couple of days, but it's not something you're likely to really come back to.

It's one of those games you play marathons on for about 2 weeks and then tired of. Those 2 weeks are pure bliss though.

Yup agreed... his other series' were much better (ie. the Civilisation series)
Port Royale is better than Pirates, and even that is a bit repetitive
