Norton Antivirus 2005 Slows Games

Norton antivirus 2005 cannot be shut down to increase the frame per second rate for video games. I refuse to let a program dictate how I will run my computer so I deleted it and switched to AVG Anti-Virus (Free Edition) which can be turned off while playing games.

Was it running a full pc scan or was it just minimized in the task tray? It shouldn't slow down your pc if it's minimized in the tray. I guess it depends on your computer -- what're your specs?

When mine is scanning my entire computer kind of bogs down.

No Sir, I am not talking about when scanning for virises. Minimizing a program in the task tray does not necessarily turn it off.

With Windows XP to turn off un-needed programs for maximun gaming performance go to the task manager by pressing Ctr.+Alt.+Delete, click on the processes tab, select each process image name that has a user name other than "SYSTEM" then click "End Process" for each one. By shutting down these un needed programs your frame per second rate for games will increase.

But Norton Antivirus 2005 is programed so that as soon as you shut it off following the method above it automatically restarts itself. NAV 2003 was not like this. So I use Grissoft AVG (free version) instead because I will not let Norton take away my control of my computer.

You've answered your own question, whazzz. Norton is a resource hog. Uninstall Norton and stick with AVG. Solid product, very small footprint, and you can't beat the price.

I knew all that, I was just saying that it takes less resources when its idling monitoring your pc from the task manager than it does when it is actively scanning for viruses. Some people do not know this.

It's a well known fact NAV is a resource hog... no shocks there. I use AVG because it's free and does the same job IMO. Each to their own, people who don't know a lot about computers might be happy using Norton, because it gives them peace of mind

I use norton because the free version of AVG wasnn't picking anything up for me. I nearly lost my pc while using it, so my father made me go buy norton since we've had it before. I periodically run the free online scan housecall by trendmicro as well to make sure I'm clean.

thats odd, cause i had the exact opposite problem. norton wasnt picking anything up for me so i switched to AVG and BAM, pulled several viruses on the first scan. after switching i did notice that when that my systerm ran better overall because of the small footprint that AVG made, which made me stick with it.

It is possible to shutdown NAV2005, but u can't do it via Task Manager. If u right-click the NAV icon in Task Bar and select disable you can disable it for a limited period of time then it will re-activate itself.

According to the NAV website its a 'new' security feature and stops those forgetful souls that disable their AV and forget to re-enable it.

Thanks for the advice but I wonder if NAV is really shutdown totally. Negeva, if you watch the Processes Tab on the Windows Task Manager while you right click NAV 2005 and select disable do all listings for NAV dissapear in the processes tab?

i tried pc-cillin 5 years ago and didn't like it. i was using nav for most of 2004, but didn't like that it was such a resource hog. i switched over to avg for a while, but i heard some good things about trend micro so i tried pc-cillin again. it's been running for about 2 months now and it's been great for me. no virus, no spyware, and it doesn't slow down my system at all.

Yes, if you're going to spend the money on AV software, get the PC-cillin Internet Security Suite. Worth the money for the added firewall protection and other features. It is much less obtrusive than Norton.

Speaking of firewall. ZoneAlarm has an excellent free firewall.

My younger brother got PC-cillin, and for some unknown reason it chewed through his internet credit like no tomorrow, as it was checking for updates 6-10 times a day, and we have to pay for each MB downloaded. $40 was lasting him 5 days, so we removed and used AVG, no worries since then. He said he couldn't stop it checking that many times a day, it was frustrating him.

On the main PC-cillin interface, click Update, then click Update Setting. From there, he can click the checkbox and choose either 3, 6, 9, or 12 hour updates. He can also uncheck the box for Enable Intelligent Update and just do them manually himself, but it's easy to forget to do that on a regular basis...

I've had this same problem when I try to play Call of Duty. I never had a problem before and when I put Norton on and even clicked disable I have really bad FPS slowdown. My computer is not slow by any means (AMD Athlon 3200+ 64, 1G Ram, Radeon 9800 Pro). This shouldn't be happening. Any ideas on how to help this outside of removing Norton?!

Hi, Sofa. Welcome to PCMech. Not that I know of. I do know CoD was kinda touchy anyway. I found I had to shut down my printer software running in the tray or it would have troubles. Disable on Norton still allows it to use up resources.

Follow the advice above. If you can, get PC-cillin, or go with AVG from www.grisoft.com for free and add a free firewall to that.

I switched to using Avast! antivirus after I found a trojan than AVG couldn't remove (yes, AVG was updated). I downloaded and ran avast and it removed the trojan.
