A Gamer's Manifesto...
Hilarious, true and something that needed to be said but oh the bitterness

This must be one of those new second-person shooters we've been hearing about where you spend the whole game looking at the hero's eye...reference to use of cutscenes to show graphics
...and instead promise me that you won't play the same Madden commentary sound files on every fifth play...reference to use of the same commentaries multiple times in madden games haha, amazing. some of this is very true, others, not so true. one thing i noticed was that while it is true that in many games, enemies still have no tactics, dont take cover, etc., it is getting better (try halo/halo 2 on legendary), and online play totally changes that whole idea.

In reality, AI is a remarkably hard thing to do. I was involved in a research program a couple of years ago that used Operation Flashpoint to test how a team of five military-trained people operate against a team of other similarly trained people... the differences in behaviour between individuals and teams was apparently quite remarkable, despite the similarity of training. Interesting, the top three teams were Air Force teams, followed by the programmers who were running the experiment. OMG, some of those made me laugh so hard. They're so true, and his method of expression is brilliant Last edited by Jaggannath; 06-05-2005 at 08:48 PM. |

That was great. All are valid points. I remembera game called Titanic where one wandered the ship talking to people to get clues to solve a mystery. This game was from about 7 years ago or so. It took some brains and was really fun. You did not wander around the ship breaking open crates so you could blow away alien forces that had invaded the ship.
I would like to see more thinking games. Titanic is the only game of this genre that I am aware of.

Another game like that is Jack the Ripper for PC. You walk around and talk to people and solve a murder mystery and there are scripted events and stuff. My wife liked it alot. If you can find it cheap, you should give it a try, you'll likely only play it once. Its a point and click game like myst though.

I used to have so much fun as a kid when I played the Carmen San Diego games on our first computer, an old IBM. I loved it, and my parents would play with me. Very educational too.
Everyone has to remember Oregon Trail too. We used to have lab day in elementary school where we would play numerous games; my favorite though was this one where you were a photographer / explorer and you were given the name of a country and then you'd have to find it on the map. If right you would go there and you'd have to take a picture of a certain specified animal then get your passport signed. No clue what the name of this was, but the guy I believe had a moustache and he would normally ride in a jeep. His vehicle depended on his locale, which I would always look forward to -- even though it was a simplistic cut scene. Anybody know the name of it? |

Myst was always too advanced for my computer when it came out. When I finally got a pc which could play it I had lost interest.

I'd never heard of Oregon Trail until this year, but we used to love the Carmen Sandiego series. We used to sit there with our reference dictionary trying to guess the answers.
Another one in the thinking genre is the Sherlock Holmes series, where they give you a number of places you can go, and all the same sites are used for all four crimes. This means that certain places are irrelevant, so you don't just click willy nilly |
