Doom 3 a letdown?
Spoiler Warning: Do not keep reading if you don't want to know Doom's twists and ending.
What did you guys think of how Doom ended? I think from Hell to the last giant cyberdemon was an incredible letdown. They put you through generic hallways differing only by the amount of blood coating the walls, while your only hope is to make it to Hell just for a change of pace. Then when you get there you're sadly disappointed. How could Hell be so bland? A bunch of hallways with candles and a couple of dozen demons. Come on. They could have done so much more with it; it could have been so much more visually pleasing -- all we got was a bunch of lava and a lot of rock everywhere. The cyberdemon was pathetic. I was so far in front of him that I could stop and actually play with the various imps and demons before blowing their brains out with a single shotgun blast. Five of them down and then you throw the soul cube -- three or four bouts of that and then he's done. Finished. Over. That's it. I found more excitement in the old Sonic the Hedgehog games; they were a bit more challenging. I'm going to backtrack and complain about Sarge. Yes, I figured either he would turn bad or the other guy with the sunglasses (I knew the doctor had to be evil, that was pretty much a given). But the way they just haphazardly told you through a wounded marine that Sarge is evil, and then you suddenly hear his demonic voice is sad to me. I killed the big ugly plasma shooting creature on wheels in less than a minute, then wondered if that was Sarge or not (I'm assuming it was). They could have made him have a greater impact to the game than that. I know he forced you to bring the reinforcements, but your decisions and their potential impacts kind of got lost in the relentless shooting. Yes, I know it's a fps, but the twenty hours of it does get nerveracking (especially all the darkness and the easy enemies). I'll quit my ranting and raving -- I apologize for this thread since it's completey useless, but I had to complain to somebody. I guess the graphics did save this since it was pretty amazing looking. The game ran wonderfully on my pc, nothing lagged ever so that wasn't a problem, I just felt let down at the end. What did you guys think of it? EDIT: BTW, how did your character go from some strange dimension in hell to lying dazed in a random hallway back in the compound at the end? That part made me want to cry.

First off, you are thinking too much. This is Doom... run and shoot.
Second, I found Hell and the ending levels of the game to be pretty well done. I can't put my finger on why though. Maybe it was the lack of imps waiting in the walls or because the scenery actually changed. Imagine a game that isn't just a corridor crawl, thank goodness. Hell was one of the better levels as voted by fans and I would have to agree. I just finished the expansion and it didn't have any teleporting enemies behind you or zombies waiting in hidden compartments behind walls for you to walk near. The expansion is pretty well done IMHO. On a side note, so much more could be done with this engine. Let's see what Quake4 brings.

For what it is, it's great. Sometimes I miss the linear run and shoot games of old.

I was a bit disappointed too. I thought it was a good game but the hallway crawling did get a bit boring and even tedious after awhile. I think more scripted events could have helped it out alot. It was too much 'run down the hallway blow monsters away, grab keycard, run back down hallway, open door' and repeat. The submersive environment was great but i need more than gee-wiz graphics to keep me entertained. Its a horror shooter and thats all that it is, it serves its purpose.

/begin side note Did I mention that this engine would be great for an AvP game. Image being a soldier and having aliens running all around you. It would have to be larger rooms than just hallways but if it was done right then it would rock. (Go Predator!) /end side note |

Im not gonna lie, i couldnt play Doom III with the lights off and almost had a few heart-attacks. I agree, the Doom III engine would make an excellent AvP game. The AvP game for sega genesis was soooo bad, ever play that?

It scared me in the beginning, but it was old hat by the end. I guess I did think too much about it, but it was supposed to be such a ground breaking game I just expected more. I was amazed by the graphics though. Oh well, sorry about the complaining but I had to vent to somebody. Thanks!

I never imagined a game could make me jump. It is indeed scarry at times. It does get tedious though to the point where you wish the game had a fast forward button to the next scene.

Overall, I preffered Doom3, but HL2 has CSS
Single player Doom3 was better than HL2, but HL2 has great MP. |

HL2 was much better. It brought you more into the game than D3.

Well, alot of people i have talked to basically told me that doom isnt a great game in most respects other then graphics. One said "its kinda like, let me walk around in this nice, graphical environment. is this fun?". i wanted to play it anyway. i figured at 25 or 30 or whatever it was, it was worth it. So i ordered it on amazon along with my summer reading for school (which do u think i'll finish first??).
Once i get it, its gonna kill me. My graphics card is in the process of being sent back to newegg, soooo all i have is onboard. i dont even wanna think about doom III running on 64mb onboard graphics. So ill have to wait. I do wanna see how the new card performs though, and how doom III is, ive never played it before

Well Doom III will certainly be a fine test for your card. What happened to it?
