Video Card Problem

Yesterday I updated to Direct X 8, so that I could try a new game. The latest drivers for my video card (ATI Rage 128) also require DX8. When I restarted my computer, it went into safe mode. I got it to work outside safe mode in 16 color 480 x600. It seems that the best course of action would be to go back to my old drivers, but when I installed DX8 it said there is no uninstall. So I'm not sure what to do now. Any suggestions?

Leave DX8 on but uninstall the ATI drivers (through add/remove programs) and change to Standard VGA. The ATI drivers must be installed when the Standard VGA driver is active.

I don't know for sure because I'm not an ATI card user, but I think Floppyman had some similar problems with an ATI product and ended up finding some "specialized" drivers that resolved this. If drivers don't help, you can always download a directx uninstaller and uninstall DirectX 8 and then re-install DX 7. Hope this helps.

Are you running a motherboard with a VIA chipset, if so, update the VIA 4 in 1 driver to 4.29 or higher to fix that problem.

I tried un-installing the ATI drivers and restarting. I then tried re-installing the drivers, but it didn't seem to fix the problem.

I opened up my computer trying to find out what type of MB it has. I can't find any name brand on it, leading me to suspect it's just a generic. Is there any way to figure out what type it is? I got some numbers off the various chips, but I'm not sure if they mean anything.

Originally my computer was made by Axis, which has apparently gone out of business so no help is to be found there

Check under System in you System Properties for anything about VIA chipsets. We ran into this problem at work with newer ATI drivers. You could boot normally, but only at 640x480 with 16 colours (sometimes 256). If you tried to change to anything higher, you would get a Windows write protection error and could only boot in safe mode until the resoulution and colour depth were reduced. Updating the Via 4 in 1 fixes it and I really do suspect this to be your problem.
