CS Source Noob

I got a voucher for counter strike source and half life 2 with the new pc i bought (built).
tried to play cs and was overwhelmed.
i get killed almost instantly and i don't know what my weapon options are.
what is the meaning of the radar and how to find the enemy.
how to communicate....

I could not find a basic tutorial that would help me get started.

Could someone please point me in the direction of a basic tutorial for noobs?

Most people who play online are quite experienced. You can first try setting up your own private server with a few bots set on easy and take it from there.

Even if you can't be told how to play good, at least give the guy some tips that will make his CS experiance easyier. Don't play cs myself, but maybe this guide can help you alittle.

You'll find a number of weapons that are quite good, most notably when you press "B 4 3" as CT and "B 4 2" as T... then press "B 6" and "B 8 2" for ammo and full armour, and go practice against bots.

C,X and Z bring up genereric team communications

you can also use V to voice communicate if you have a microphone

Press Y to type to everyone on the server and U to type to your teammates only

ALWAYS buy full armor first, then choose your weapon accordingly.

Shoot in short burts. shoot in short bursts. did i mention shoot in short burts? This is especially true with any of the rifles. CS isnt an arcade game, you cant just hold down the trigger and expect to hit someone. Long distance battles you should be shooting no more than 2 bullets at a time, You will quickly find out this is especially true for the ak47 at all ranges.

since you are new its a good idea to stick with teammates. Try and follow a group of people with halfway descent scores.

If your in a battle and have to reload, run side to side while reloading but always stand still when shooting(my opinion)

Q is the quick switch key. I always have my pistol and rifle as teh switches, so if u run out of rifle ammo you can hit Q and quickly bring out the pistol.

Always aim for the head, always.

Thats about all i can think of right now. hope it helps a little

how can anybody press any of the buttons while in action?
How many hands do you have?
Do you program your mouse buttons to do all that?
Unless i'm ambushing an entrance, I get killed as soon as the firefight begins.
Do you press c or x or z and then choose a command? I'd get shot before I can move my finger back to the movement control keys.

What am I missing?

Something nobody mentioned....what are your ping rates like? You could be in some laggy servers (for you) and never have a chance. Just a thought....

You run using wsad, r reloads, and I generally don't type messages to team-mates except for when dead... I have a mic so I can speak though. Ctrl crouches for me, and q is quickswitch. These are all near your left hand, whilst your right is on the mouse.

Just practice, you'll get better the more you play. Short bursts, and dodge

using the A and D key, so going side to side... it makes it harder to the other ppl hit u and if u get good enough u can hit them while ur moving. and yea shoot bursts, if u get a chance to pick up an ak u should (unless its like a good rifle) if i have an m4 i usually would swap, or an SMG id swap for ak...

Depends... sometimes I'm on a roll with an M4, switch to AK and hit a bad patch where I just can't seem to kill anything.

well, I play halo and css, i love both of them. I like you am not the best at it but could be if i played. A lot of the people who play the game are losers who play day and night. to make it easier you might want to go into control options and enable quick weapon switching. And if its your own server, you can hit ~ and use cheats. type sv_cheats 01
then you can find css cheats online.
Also noclip works if you type it in after hitting ~.

- JAck

P.S Spartan, what server do you play in on halo. You mean halo pc right.
It really sucks that the servers are so little now. nobody plays anymore.

PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!
thats if you wanna be good. ofcourse many people dont have that amount of time(im one of them)

few tips:
-try to strafe when someones shooting you
-handguns are overlooked, dont bother waiting to reload...take out the pistol
-assult rifles can go through boxes and even walls sometimes (if he is hiding behind one...empty your clip)
- anticipate where your target is gonna be(especially sniping)
-fire in short burst.m4 and AK are the most powerful and accurate automatic rifles
-flashbangs are useful(very)

i never played so much CS till i got to uni.the graphics suck but gameplay is there.
one more tip if u have a half decent graphics card
in the console type in:
fps_max 101
that will increase framerate and its easier to see what you are shooting at

geez. When I first started playing CSS (on the PC in my sig) I ran about 40 FPS (compared to SoF2 I ran 50-100 FPS) now I can't play CSS with over 30 FPS IF I'm Lucky!!!!! I get 0-15 FPS normally.... I can't wait to get a new pc. I am about to buy it, but first I want to make sure it can handle all the programs I'm going to use on it

I remember posting the same as Peekaboo when I first started playing CSS. It's pretty disheartening at first but you will get better. Some good advice on this thread but as long as your game is running smoothly, forget playing with console commands for now, just get used to the maps, and feel and pace of the game.

I don't think it's been mentioned above but it really helps me to use headphones and the walk key (shift I believe but haven't played for a while cos Valve broke the game for me).

Listen for footsteps. if you hear some check your radar and if there's no-one on your team close by, hide behind a corner. Most players will just steam past you allowing you to unload a clip on em.

Conversely, walking instead of running makes you completely silent, so other people won't be able to use the tactic I described above if they can't hear your footsteps. Be careful reloading or changing weps when using stealth though as other players can hear these actions.

Also, I would forget stealth at the beginning of a round, just try these tactics when there are fewer players one each team after the initial firefights.

Btw, that may have been like I know what I'm on about, but I'm still not that good at CSS! There's guys on there who have played CS for years who really can Play...

The more you play, the quicker you will get with pressing the correct buttons. Try to utilize the quickswitch button "q" alot. It comes in handy when you run out of ammo in your primary weapon, press q to quickly pull out your pistol.

Just keep playing. It will come with time.

Thanks for all the replies.
How come sometimes i can play with no problem, and sometimes i can only move a couple of steps and then the screen freezes or shakes and then i jump back a couple of steps?
changing servers doesn't seem to help.

That's definitely lag... make sure nothing is running simultaneously if it's not the server

I used to play about 3-4 hours a day about 4 years ago, all my mates did. We were crazily good at the game, but after about one and a half years we had to concentrate on our degrees

[Edit]:
Rave, those videos weren't CS, they were Warcraft III and another random one

I think practicing would be your best bet in getting better. I am horrible at the game (was horrible at the original). I just get on and have fun - my score is usually like 10 - 40 (I'm am REALLY bad). I usually just stick with a bunch of people and try to survive. I'll have like one hot streak a game then I'll just play lousily for the rest of the game.
