BF2 Help

Recently I reinstalled windows because BF21 was taking about 3 mins to verify the cleint data, however when it did the game was running fine.

Now I have what appears to be hardware lag, however the odd thing is that sometimes I manage to fix it (once it was the speaker wizard, the other time it was changing to cat 5.6 drivers) - however when I restart the computer it is back to showing signs of hardware lag.

I know that's quite confusing but I don't know how else to put it. I don't have service pack 2 (I have service pack 1 installed). My specs are : AMD 2600XP, 1 Gig 3200 RAM, Radeon 9800 pro, and on board sound.

I'm reluctant to e-mail EA since from past experience they haven't helped.

Thanks in advance.

It's the bizarre thing where I fix it, restart and then it's back to not working that's really got me puzzled.

EDIT: Just tried playing Half Life 2 - it's running completely fine.
