7800gtx or x850xt

Which would be the better preformance card for gaming?
Opinions, Reasons why? I have been a Ati guy forever but I saw the 7800 running Everquest II and it was amazing.
So which is the better preforming card?

Flames aside, the 7800gtx is the better performer and is the choice I would go with, all things equal.

You notice the first 3 posters all start with 'D' and have "dar" as their first three letters? Ahh, it's the little things in life, lol. We need someone else who starts with a 'D' to post.

Hands Down - the 7800.

The 7800, newer card. But if I was you, I would just wait for ATI's new card comin out. Suppose to blow the 7800 out of the water.

Down with the hype machine my friend. Nothing is proven yet and from early benchies that I've seen it only matches 7800gtx. Sorry, no blowing up of water here.

For me, it's a question of performance vs. price to equal value. They are both great cards. I debated long and hard, but went with the X850XT 'cause I got a great deal on it....$320 to my doorstep, brand new retail package. The same card is $580 at Newegg. If I had to pay close to that level, I would have grabbed the 7800GTX. However, I took the $220 savings and sacrificed 10-20 fps in some games and was 10-20 fps faster in others. Hardly noticeable in either case. In no games I play (RVS, BF2, COD, MOH, and I just bought Doom3), have I not been able to play everything at the highest resolutions with all the eye candy turned on. No lag, great performance. So there you have it, about as generic an opinion as you could ask for.

I am just sayin, I would wait to see what ATI offers before I commit to a card. If its nothing special, then the 7800 should be a little cheaper. So what could it hurt?

I agree with JFK, I got my x850xt for $325 which is $200 cheaper than a 7800gtx, so price/performance wise the x850xt is better. You really cant compare them anyway because the 7800gtx is a generation newer than the x850xt so of course the 7800gtx gives better performance, thats a no brainer.

Yes, but money aside like the thread is about, which one yeilds better preformance, then like everyone has said - the 7800gtx.

If it were a preformance to dollar ratio then it would be very close and the x850xt might actually produce more preformance for its cost.

To sum it up, the 7800GTW will give you better bang, but the X850 XT will give you the best bang for the buck (IMO)

Ever noticed how the newest of everything is rumoured to blow the slightly previous technology out of the water, but never does??

I wouldnt say never does, it might. We wont know until we see some benchmarks but I doubt it too. The 7800 is a beast, I dont see Ati bringing anything out thats gonna blow it out of the water but definatley compete with it.

I guess we will see I am waiting though just so I don't go "Doh" for not waiting a month for a better card for the same price.

Agreed noc, just an observation that blow it out of the water is always stated, and pretty much always an overinflated way of saying it'll have an extra cycle per second (or Hertz) over the other

Well the 6xxx series was a major improvement over the FX series. I'd say that is an example of the newer blowing the older out of the water. The 7800GTX is also a very large increase in performance.

I haven't seen anything blown out of the water since the first time I saw Unreal on a Voodoo card. Everything else has been incremental. Man, GLide was cool...
