Good news and bad news for gamers...
The good news:
Microsoft Games released a demo for one of the most anticipated games of the year - Age of Empires III. Yay! The bad news: This game is a dog when it comes to graphics! I was playing the same 2 levels (all the demo has to offer) religiously over the weekend to try and find the best graphics settings. I inevatably ended up with low shading, no shadows, a refresh rate of 70, and rough texturing just to get the game to run smoothly (FYI: i'm playing this game with the PCI-e MSI 6600GT [single card]) So it looks like no shimmer-y, golden "bloom" effect for me (as seen in the screenshots) hopefully i will be able to upgrade before the mid-October release date! |

Keep in mind that the game is still a demo and alot of stuff is going to change, at least I hope. I still havent decided if the graphics are better or worse. I didnt really play it much but I do hope it gets better. I used to not be an age of empires fan but since most people here, in mexico, play the game I was somewhat forced to play by friends. I have an ati 8500 and I had no problems running the game.

Also requires a > 1400 Mhz processor and > 64Mb video card. The graphics were a bit underwhelming but their focus is generally on the play which seemed pretty similar to the last version.

Yeah, nothing special... however, the real deal will be much more intensive and better in general than the demo, so don't can it just yet

Hmm...do you reckon the game will run smoother and be less "card-hogging" for the graphics card when the full version comes out?

I reckon they'll have ironed out minor glitches, so it should run smoother. I'd say it'll require the same quality card and will tax it equally hard
