Varies by your internet connection.
In UT on the closest servers I play on, using a DSL connection, I get 60-80. Xayd |

Glad you asked the question, I'd like to know how I measure up.
Cable modem PIII 700 @ 932 Matrox G400 256 CAS2 Ram Madcatz PantherXL joystick/trackball I get 48 FPS (tops) in Counter srike. I'm thinkin' Geforce 2, prices are good but I don't know what improvement to expect. Any comments? AndyM

With your setup, you can expect better than 70-80 FPS in Counter Strike with a GeForce 2. You may even achieve more than that.

Thanks tireool, I'm drooling all over myself just thinkin about it. Tell me, will that take out some of the "choppiness"? That's what I'm after.
Also, If you don't mind...which Geforce card would you recommend. |

While you're at it you might wanna pick up a backup Panther XL. Alot of folks in the UT community have been in an uproar since MadCatz basically announced the death of this device, they're not gonna make em anymore
.There's actually a petition floating around that's gonne be sent to them, begging to continue making them, but it doesn't look good at this point. Xayd |

Truthfully, since most video card manufacturers follow NVidia's reference design, any of the GeForce 2 cards would be a good choice. I prefer Elsa. I've had two Elsa cards (Elsa Erazor X GeForce 256, and Elsa Gladiac 32 Meg DDR GeForce 2 GTS) and both have been strong performers and neither of the two ever got too hot or gave me problems. Leadtek, Hercules, ASUS or Creative Labs also make a quality GeForce 2 card.

So, what do I look for in the Ram department on the card? I'm confused by all the different models to choose from. I don't know enough about DDR, etc. to be able to sort it out...
Oh, and RE: the PantherXL, workin' on that as we speak! I really enjoy gaming with the joystick only. Never did develop skill with keyboard and mouse... |

Basically nVidia makes the chipset and gives out a reference design, and these manufacturers make the cards with that chipset/design and their own RAM.
Hence, if you pay 80 dollars for a Geforce2, expect crap-ass RAM on it .Get a card from a well-known manufacturer, and it should be fine. Xayd |

Any 32 meg GeForce 2 GTS card is going to have DDR (Double Data Rate) memory. Alot of the GeForce 2 MX cards use regular SDR (Single Data rate) memory... but the MX is a scaled down version with limited capabilities anyways... so it doesn't hurt it's performance much.
If you are definitely going to get a new card based on the GeForce, I would recommend the Elsa Gladiac, Leadtek Winfast GeForce 2 GTS, the ASUS V7700 32MB Pure, or the Creative Labs 3D Blaster Annihilator 2, in that order... All of these cards are advertised on Pricewatch for less than $140. |

Someone asked me how to find out your frames per second in Counter Strike... so here goes...
From the console (you can enter the console by pressing the tilde key. Looks like ~ or `) type "cl_showfps 1" without the quotation marks. This will show your current frames per second. Mine hover right around 75-80 with a Celeron 900 MHz system, 128 Megs of RAM, and an Elsa Gladiac video card. |

I was just wondering if my system was performing up to par. In Counter-Strike i'm gettin about 80-90 FPS.

Sounds like a nice flicker-free setup to me!
Really though... anything over 45-50 FPS looks smooth. |

Wow, nice find. Anyone who uses these would be well served to buy two spares at that price, just in case

My mistake!
It was Wallmart not K-mart that had them! I went back today and ALL the Panther units were gone! All that was left was 7 Wingman digital pros for $20.00 ea.! They had two temp. shelf units full just the other day! Now it`s almost all gone! Good deals never last!!! |
