Battlefield 2 crashes after 1.03 patch

I just installed the 1.03 patch and now I can't load any multiplayer maps... it just crashes to desktop. I never had any problems with it before (unlike a lot of people I've heard).

I even tried uninstalling, and THAT won't even work! The setup program acts like it's starting up and then flickers and crashes too! I don't get any error messages, just plain crash to the desktop (running XP pro). What the heck... I can't play and I can't reinstall!?

Singleplayer seems to work fine, but multiplayer has been screwed since I installed the patch today. Any suggestions?

Ok... it isn't blocking anything. I never had any problems before the patch so I don't think it's a connection issue. Everything works fine up until it tries to load the map.

Still check the firewall settings. The exe file would have been updated, and it has a different checksum than before so it'll show up new to your firewall...

When you uninstalled did you delete the game folder?

Well, here's the funny thing: when the uninstall didn't work (the setup program crashes with no error messages) I decided to delete the game folder and start over. But I just deleted it to the recycle bin in case I couldn't get it back. It turns out the setup from the CD doesn't work anyway, even with all the game folders gone. I restored them from recycle and the game still works (except for joining a server of course). It must be something with the patch cause I've heard a LOT of people that have had this problem. Maybe they'll release a hotfix soon.

Nothing... it used to work fine with MSN running, but I even closed that just to make sure. My taskbar has nothing but the SP2 Security Alert icon.

Interesting point... the odd thing is that the first time I booted up BF2 after the patch, I never saw this new unblock message from the firewall. Only after I deleted the old BF2 exceptions did I have to "ok" a new one. But since I haven't even been able to uninstall the game, I can't start over to test it. Even add/remove programs is unsuccessful cause it just tries to run the same setup program that is crashing.

UPDATE: On top of being able to get in singleplayer maps, I can also load a map if I make my own multiplayer server. The problem is joining games, so I can see where you guys get the idea that it's a firewall problem. I double checked the SP2 firewall, and the exe for BF2 is definately listed as an exception.

The problem once again: I try to join a server, it says "Joining server"... then it CTD with no error messages. Just crash... hrgerglblah! Same with the setup program... it initializes the thing and then flickers a fullscreen window really quick before CTD without a trace.

I too have a problem with battlefield 2. Every time I try to connect to a sever a message pops up and tells me I have a modded version. The only mod I did was the resolution mod and the skip movies mod. Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance

Um, try removing the mod.

I had a problem like this as well. There is a support folder under Battlefield 2 that has an exe file. I can't remember the name of the filer but it has an EA logo. If you click that file it will ask you to reenter your CD key.

I had to do this for mine since it was doing the same thing to the T that yours is doing. It didn't have to do with the patch though, it had to do with me uninstalling 1942 and DC and somehow the cd key get wiped. If you do this, it will work. I am almost sure.

Whoa! That might just be my problem, cause I DID recently uninstall BF1942 and DC. I don't know why that'd cause the problem, but I bet it'd help. Let me give it a shot.

EDIT: I re-entered the CD key and it accepted it. Now the game doesn't crash anymore, but when I try to join a server it says my CD key is invalid. Suggestions?

Patch problems

There is a problem with the patch. All of the issues described above are being experienced by many users while the patch might work fine for others. I have no problems with the game with 1.02 but had a "patch failed" error when installing 1.03. After that it was all uphill. Repatched after that and it appeared to complete without error but the game would crash to desktop during multiplayer map loading. A fresh start using the manual removal of the game and all related folder and the patching for the CD version to 1.03 resulted in a successful patch but the game would not even start. I would get the battlefiled logo but then back to desktop. Another fresh start and patch and then the "modified content" message when trying to connect to a server but had no modified content.

My friend who is networked to me wirelessly got the patch file from my system and it worked fine for me. Another friend on the network got the same file from me and it failed but worked after a few uninstalls and retries.

All of the computers had free HD space in excess of 50gb, no firewall or antivirus and no apps running that were not necessary.

I ended up fixing mine by copying the entire battlefield 2 folder from my friends computer after he had patched and overwriting mine.

If all else fails you can use System Restore to go "back in time" to when Battlefield 2 worked just fine.

I did... I'm pretty sure it won't let you enter a wrong code.

ok according to filefront this is what it said

AFTER RELEASING a patch for Battlefield 2 earlier today, EA is now likely having a nice time cataloguing problems people seem to have with it.
Thanks to a couple of responses from readers this morning we've found a distinct problem with the latest patch for Battlefield 2. It looks like the 1.03 patch encrypts the CD-key value in the windows registry. Most likely this is done to avoid the theft of CD-keys by malicious software while you're playing online. It's a clever move.

Unfortunately, it looks like this encryption of the CD-key is specific to the Windows User Account that was used to install the patch. If any other Windows user attempts to play the game on the same machine they are given a message saying the key is invalid.

So far we haven't been able to contact EA for comment. Thanks to Breen Oullette for his detailed description of what seems to have gone wrong on his machines

so perhaps yea the patch is normal but the users and such.

Hi all!

I had the same problem and i tried everything that EA suggested. I repatched the game, uninstalled it manually and set it up again and then again patched. Nothing helped in my case.

Then in some forum I noticed a message where someone informed, that by doing that patch as informed in case of "Patching failed" on EA game support, along the other patching files there is a file named BF2CDKeyCheck.exe.

He told that after patching once he had runned the Battlefield 2_code.exe from BF2 support folder and re-entered the CD key and then executed that prementioned BF2CDKeyCheck.exe, the fellow was able to overcome his Invalid CDkey problem.

I tried this and there it goes, no more stupid error message. Hopefully this may help in your cases also

You have to remove these Registry keys to be able to reinstall that will solve the installer starting and stopping issue.
Click on Run.
Type regedit in the text field.
Click File and then choose Export.
Name the file Backup and make sure the
Export Range
is set to All.
Click Save; you will now be returned to the Registry Editor window.
Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the plus sign next to Software.
Click the plus sign next to DICE.
Right-click on the Battlefield 2 folder and choose Delete.
Click the plus sign next to Electronic Arts.
Right-click and choose Delete on any Battlefield 2 folders.
Click the plus sign next to Microsoft.
Click the plus sign next to Windows.
Click the plus sign next to CurrentVersion.
Click the plus sign next to Uninstall.
Right-click and choose Delete on the key named {04858915-9F49-4B2A-AED4-DC49A7DE6A7B}.
Close the Registry Editor.
