Well.... this is kind of a bench. The whole reason for me upgrading to an X2 was so I could "crunch" movies and still use the computer for other things. Here's a simple test I did:

With the old unit 3500+, TMPGEnc would take right about 3 hours 40 minutes to crunch a typical 2 hour movie. The computer was pretty much useless for other tasks.

The 4800+ takes about 2 hours 25 minutes in single CPU mode. Naturally, doing other work still flies along while crunching.

Turning the multithread switch on in TMPGEnc, I crunched a movie in 1 hour 18 minutes, and still had enough horse power to check email, surf, and other light duty tasks.

Note that the crunch time will vary, as the crunch time includes removing the commercials, so if a movie has more commercials that I remove, it'll crunch even that much faster.

AWESOME! Dude, that's why I can't wait to either build a system around a C2D or wait for a Kentsfield Quadro. It'll run circles around my current P4 3.0Ghz Northwood system. I do a bit of video editing and DVD authoring/encoding. I can't wait to see the difference it makes in saving me time and letting me continue doing other things while I burn my home videos to DVD.

I was more impressed than when I went from the 1800+ to a 2700+, by far! You'll love a dual core build if you do vid editing / authoring!

I'll enter the dual core market once games start taking advantage of the multiple cores.

Just tried out super pi on my new laptop, got 37s for 1 million. Tried it on my old Athlon 2000+, took a minute 18.

What is the best (free) benchmarking program? I see most people posting 3DMark scores, should I try that out?

Dell E1705 - T2400, 2GB DDR2 533, geforce 7800

3DMark03 = 9255
1M SuperPi = 38s

I expected the 3DMark score to be a little higher, but I guess it's not too bad...

edit: I downloaded some new drivers from laptopvideo2go.com...but my score dropped to 4725. The entire time it was blowing cold air out the vents, so I know it wasn't working hard at all. ????
edit: lol, I guess I'm just terrible at this benchmarking business...turns out all I had to do is tweak the settings, and I got a 9600 and a warm laptop. =)

download this....then run it...you will have to extract the file... extract them...make sure the check box is checked to show extracted files....

with the extracted files shown...right click the Super Pi exe file...click pin to start up menu...then when you click start it's right there...

New Aquamark Score

I used a better (i.e. not buggy) driver, installing the 96.98 alienware modified 8800GTX driver instead of the 97.44 supplied by Nvidia, and not only did my score improve, but the whole system is more stable.

Aquamark of 168,312 with all stock speeds!

Hey i just tested with 3dmark06. My system isn't that recent but i still like the marks i got with my stuff. I got 3718 at 1680 by 1050 resolution with just 1 7800GTX 512MB, 2 gb of ram and an amd 4000+. I also enabled force full precision graphics and AF at x16! No overclocking

Not as good as I hoped

Main Test Results
3DMark Score 2560 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 1289 Marks
SM 3.0 Score 1161 Marks
CPU Score 531 Marks

Man, were my framerates low on the CPU tests! Sheesh- well, at least I can play FEAR with some eye candy....
Actually, the 3DMark score was over 2900 when I was using the original Nvidia drivers. However, I also updated the sound drivers, don't know if they can interfere with fps or not. My visual quality seems better after updating the Nvidia drivers (the 93.71's). Don't know which was originally installed.

Letsee, AA is off, image setting is at "Perform," Aniso is at "Application Controlled," and screen resolution is at 1024 X 768.

EDIT:
Ok, with the same settings as above on 3DMark 05 I got

3DMark Score 5284 3DMarks
CPU Score 2518 CPUMarks

You can see the results online here. http://service.futuremark.com/orb/re...=0&UID=7595155

Here is an FPS screenshot: http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/2875/fpslolnb7.jpg

Just goes to show the amount of performance an E6300 can give. Now do note that in such a hallway it is easy to get that many FPS, and the server was empty. On a full server, on that map, I'd get more around 180 FPS.

Yeah, the 06 test is a tough one to score on. On that CPU test I was showing 0 on a lot of frames.

I just got a 7900 gt, I'm gonna install it now and post my new score. Hope it helps.

EDIT:
Here's new baseline score on 3DMark06: 2854
