Recording from LP to CD
Does anyone know of a "free" program that is capable of recording from an LP or tape cassette to a CD?

Usually a recording software comes with the sound card. Just browse the CD.

My sound card is about 3-years old and does not have this feature.
The software that came with my CD is adaptec easy CD creator "standard". It advertizes that I can get the feature to record from LP or cassette tape to a CD by upgrading to the "deluxe" version for $99! That seems to me like a lot of money to pay for the one feature that I am interested in -- especially if there is a free program that does the job. Last edited by Roberto; 06-22-2001 at 10:22 AM. |

Hardware............
The LP or Cassette should have standard RCA jacks labeled "Line Out Right" & "Line Out Left". If your sound card has a "Line In" jack, you're in business. A "Y" cable with 2 RCA jacks on one end, and a 1/8th stereo jack on the other will do the trick. A single band on the stereo jack records in mono while a double banded stereo jack records in stereo. Connect "Line Out" L&R on LP or Cassette To ....... "Line In" on sound card Software ............ I use GoldWave. $40 http://www.goldwave.com/ Remember, these wav files get really big. A cassette tape could take up 500MB, or more. Make sure you have the disk space on your hard drive. |

Thanks MadMax.
I have an old dual cassette stereo with a Jack for earphones. I purchased a line from radioshack that has a plug for the earphones on one and another plug for sound card input on the other end. Would that work? I still need software. The option of goldwave at $40 is better than Easy CD Creator at $99. I assume that it works just as well or perhaps better. Does anyone have any comparisons to offer? I'll probably wait to find out if there are any other suggestions or software options before making a decision. Can't say if recording from the earjack would work or not.
As for Goldwave, it's shareware. You can try before you buy. |
