What do you use to play games?

Hi

I'm new to the PC gaming scene and orginally just played them on the PS2.

What peripherals do you recommend?

I've been playing Far Cry with keyboard and mouse but far prefer playing FPS with a gamepad so thinking about getting one. I prefer a system like time splitters where you move with one thumbstick and aim with the other.

Clearly strategy games and RPGs are better with keyboard/mouse but how do you feel about the rest?

To be honest, I find aiming in FPS's easiest with a mouse... take some time to get used to it first, it's a totally different feeling to a joypad. Nowadays I find it extremely difficult to play them with a pad, just because a mouse is so much faster and more accurate...

If I were to use a joypad, though, I would get one of those adapters that let you plug in a Playstation2 pad into a USB port... console joypads, in my experience, are significantly better than PC ones

Mouse and keyboard is what the majority of gamers prefer due to the increased accuracy you can achieve. A mouse beats a controller hands down in most fps.

Mouse and keyboard. If I'm playing a flight sim or something, then I might use a joystick, but mostly keyboard and mouse.

Mouse + Keyboard - just simpler to me, and I already am used to using it; so why change.

Mouse & keyboard. I've dislike consoles and console-like controlers for the fact that when you pan around like you would with a mouse, you do so at one steady speed. You can't get any "turn around and shoot" quickshots off.

Joysticks for flight sims is another story, however.

Definately a joystick for anytime you're controlling a plane.

I started out as a PC gamer with Lemmings in DOS using a keyboard/mouse. I never had a console until the Xbox. I can't stand playing most games with a game pad. The keyboard/mouse is FAR superior. There is no possible way to get the kind of accuracy from a gamepad as you get with a keyboard/mouse.

There are a few games I prefer with a gamepad. Prince of Persia: Sands of time and the first Splinter Cell (though I'm starting to prefer the mouse playing SC 2 on PC).

For driving games I have a Microsoft Sidewinder Forcefeedback wheel. I wish they still made them. I haven't found anything nicer.

For flying I have a Microsoft Sidewinder Forcefeedback joystick. Again, I wish they still made them.

Mouse and keyboard. I prefer either a Logitech MX510 or MX518 mouse and use a Saitek Executive keyboard. Some folks prefer the Zboard. In any event a mouse is superior to a gamepad for FPS games.

Keyboard and optical mouse all the way. Joystick for flight sims.

Wish an arcade controller could be connected to the PC.

What do you guys think about gaming with wireless peripherals, such as keyboards and mice? I've heard of significant reponse delays. Is that true?

Delays are a thing of the past with modern wireless mice/keyboards from reputable manufacturers. I have never experienced lag on a wireless keyboard or mouse.

A friend of mine recently purchased a Logitech set... the keyboard is pretty nice, but the mouse is so laggy he's had to find a different one to plug in so he can play games!

Really? I've never had problems with wireless mice. (I did have this one crappy one that guzzled the batter power...and it wasn't optical, but...) I don't get wireless keyboards, cause that'd be silly for me. It never moves.

I've got a basic Microsoft Wireless opical mouse that works great for games...

i'm one of the few people that prefers a gamepad over a mouse, this is probably because growing up my parents never owned a computer that wasn't outdated. Most computer games just wouldn't run well so i never got into them and i never got used to a keyboard and mouse. Now that i have the money to maintain my own computer i might get into games on pc i don't know. Problem is i'm way to cheap to buy video games very often.

I only prefer gamepads for consoles, and consoles are (IMO) only good for multi-player games that you can and should be playing drunk (ie. racing, anything Mario and sports games)

It all depends on what game is being played.
Battlefield2 mouse & keyboard
nascar sim racing racing wheel
madden football game pad
flight sim(s) flight stick

in general, 1st person shooter games you cant beat keyboard and mouse
driving games cant beat a wheel
flying games flight stick
ect...

I can't say I've actually seen any serious problems first-hand, but I much prefer wired to wireless when it comes to keyboards and mice.
