Aren't you allowed to make copies of items which you own?

Correct. If its for your personal use.
And there are legit reasons to do so. Last week I accidently broke my copy of Morrowind on the stupid hard plastic retainer in the jewel case. I could see the crack spreading from the center and knew the disc wouldn't survive long. I could've made a backup and trashed the old disc. Now it won't load.

Just because something can be used illegally doesn't mean it should be outlawed.

I think you are, but it's really stretching the limits of legality. Even if some people do make back ups, they still have to implement copy protection because twice as many people are going to try and pirate it.

While that may be true, it is still indeed legal to make copies of items which you own.

What you do after making the copy (keep for personal use, give to a friend, or try to sell it) defines the legality of your action. The latter 2 of the 3 would be the illegal options.

Ummm... I think if Sonic Vanguard were to see this you'd get a very different opinion on the legality of this approach, although I'm not certain

True, but he owns his copyrighted work so he tends to support all legal measures to protect it - which he should.

I dont see what the arguement here is. The law says it is legal to make copies of work if you own it and the copies are meant only for yourself. If you distribute or sell them then they become illegal. That's pretty clear cut to me.

Now back to the original question of the thread - Spearball, I believe either Nero or Alcohol 120% would work for you and help you with your copyright problems.

EDIT: I'm tired of these discussions always centering around the legality of the issue instead of the question that's been asked. If his question is illegal, then we should tell him so, lock the thread, and move on. If legal, then we ought to state why it's legal, then help him with his problem. We should not go on a tangent and give our opinions of what ought to be legal and what ought not. Too many threads have fallen to this plague, and I for one would like to see it stopped. Help him and get on with your lives.

If I've angered anyone, then please send me a pm and I'll be glad to discuss things with you.

Guys this is #9 from forum rules : # Zero Tolerance on Piracy
NO WAREZ. NO SERIALS. NO CRACKS / CRACKING / ILLEGAL PROGRAMS. Anything that can be used in software piracy or other illegal software activities will result in a ban. Same goes for abusive programs like mailbombers, forum and usenet flooders and email harvesting bots. This also includes unreleased products. Workarounds which comprimise security, bypass password protection, or otherwise go to gain unauthorized access to private data or information is prohibitied. Links provided to locations that offer tutorials or tips for any of these activities are also forbidden.

So, no, we can't answer spearball.
Now that you've all had a chance to answer I'm closing this thread.
