question about the PSP (potential buyer)

Im thinking about getting a PSP, have some questions first for those who have one or know a lot about it.

Can I somehow copy my home dvds onto it? How much information can be saved on it? And whats up with the memory card?

I understand that it can play games, movies, music, and pictures, and it gets wireless internet, but im trying to figure out how that all works and what the limitations are.

thanks in advance

there is a way you can copy dvds to it but you need a program to convert to .mp4 format. and how much you store in there depends on how big your memory stick is. you need a memory stick pro duo to store the things in. if you have anymore questions i would be happy to answer it becuase i have one myself

Well I'm pretty sure that requires some hacking...which starts to stretch the limits of legality.

i don't think so because all your doing is converting your own dvds to mp4 format

plus all the game saves, pics, and other stuff, basically the memory stick is like the hard drive for the psp, but for web browsing, you don't use the memory stick you use the small internal memory for the web browsing, since its so small you can't really go to sites with too much pictures

Right. I'm pretty sure internet surfing requires a hack to unlock the internal browsers. Actually, kevinf, I was thinking you had to do some hacking to watch videos (but you don't right?), that's why I was questioning the legality.

web browsing requires no hacking at all, just update the firmware to 2.0 and above, psps they sell now should have that firmware version installed already

Google 'X-oom' for a new retail app for converting DVD to work on PSP. Just saw it on the ebuyer newsletter today. Haven't used it but it may be safer than something you download for free.

Thinking of getting it myself but I bought my PSP really for gaming (though at the moment haven't found that many great games!)

hmmm well some one forgot to mention the 4gb hdd for the PSP. iits about 200 dollars but its actually cheaper to buy this then 4 1gb stick duo things

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1126591859519

plus i think it has a extended battery life.

plenty of legal movie converters out there, sony even has one lol

ya i saw that too, but the bad part is that it makes the psp ugly and much heavier and bulkier

i bought a psp a while back, and two things that you should take into account. 1. always go value pack, always
2. do not get a 512, its actually 468mb, and it is not worth the time to convert movies onto it, get a 1gb.
3.alot of the games are not really that good for it, with some very obvious exceptions. gta and burnout being prime examples.
4. This is very very very very important, get a SCREEN PROTECTOR, the thing is probably the world's most effective finger print and dust magnet, get a screen protector, something sony should have pre-applied.
5.you might want a spare battery, because they are nothing compared to the GBA Sp batterries.
6. Enjoy

i dont think so, tho they will lower the PS2 to combat the xbox360. and 1gb memory is pretty pricey, the 4gb hdd is a better deal (even if its odd and or ugly)

a psp is not like a game boy, it is a much more expensive purchase, so keep that in mind

I read the psp's with the new 2.6 firmware are out now which allows for it to play .wma music files and rss feeds. People are already finding ways of streaming audio and video to it from online, pretty cool imo, seems like these psp's do it all. Id like to get one but i'll wait for a price drop and few more good games to come out for it. I seen a box at bestbuy near the psp stuff that advertised it would convert any downloaded video files into psp compatible video files and transfer them to your psp, dont remember what it was called or if it worked with dvds but worth checking out. How big would a dvd movie file be when converted to .mp4. I would think it would be much smaller than normal since your have to greatly lower the resolution for the psp screen.

2.6 firmware info:
