How come Far Cry demo runs like crap?

When I run the far cry demo on anything but low settings, i get artifacts (rainbow colored ground) and terrible effects like plants with boxes around them, no reflections.

On low settings the artifacts seem to go away, but things still look pretty crappy (as I would expect for low settings).

High doesn't do much except cause artifacts and throw in a few more objects (more plants which don't look very good). My specs seem good enough to run the game fairly well. What's going on?

Btw, other games like Half-Life 2, Battlefield 2 ect. run fine with no artifacts.

My specs are in sig->

I play FarCry with Dual 6800s, and I am subject to similar "crappyness" - but only on the very high settings. I really don't know why, except perhaps it is older than your video card and does not recognize it and its full potential?

Well since Far Cry is only $20 now, I was thinking about picking it up, but if it runs like the demo then no way. Can you see the pretty reflections like in the screenshots?

I hate the way the water looks in the demo for me... no reflections and you can see all the way to the bottom.

You need to download the patch for the game.

FarCry is a terrific game for the $20 price tag. Look through the Patch's release notes to see if they corrected any graphical errors with the nVidia cards.

I'm talking about the demo. So if I patched the retail version, do you think it'd improve it a lot?

I had read somewhere in the FarCry website about a problem with nVidia cards being addressed, hence my suggestion. Also, I am assuming that you are running the latest version of the nVidia drivers, yes?

The FC demo has and does have all kinds of problems and is known for them but since it is a demo they didnt patch it. If you buy the full game just update to the latest patch and everything will run fine.

The demo did the same thing with my 6600GT. I bought the retail game, installed the patches, and it runs beautifully. I say go ahead and buy the game. It is a very good game.

I second that. One of the best games ever made. Way better than Doom 3.

Cool. I just wanted to make sure the problems with the demo were a known issue and not something that would show up in the patched game. Sounds good, thanks for the info.

Yeah it was sort of a shock when I installed my 6600 GT. I had a Ti 4800SE before and the demo looked good on it. I installed the 6600 GT and it looked way worse. I was relieved to discover that it was known issue and the retail game works fine. Enjoy.
