Won't let me play this game
I got Master of Orion off of Underdog and I have downloaded and unzipped everything. However, when I go to play the game, it tells me that I need 1,025K in expanded memory or something very similar. Whenever I go to the install menu to see about fixing the hardware configuration, it tells me that I don't have an EMS driver. I'm running Windows XP Home edition with service pack 2. I have 512MB Total physical memory and 34.19MB available physical memory. As you can probably tell, I know my way around a computer, but I don't know a lot of the technical aspects of it. Any help you all can give me would me very much appreciated. Thanks.

What is Underdog?
Chances are you can make a shortcut and tell it to run in a compatible mode. Welcome to PCMECH

fudtone> Underdog's is a site that has old games that are no longer for sale. I think most people call these things abandonware if I'm not mistaken. Basically you can download an old game to play and the software maker usually won't say much about it, as far as being illegal or anything, since the games are pretty old.
As for the problem, that game originally ran under a DOS environment. DOS used memory manager programs to stuff files into an area called high memory or upper memory (basically the area above the old 640K standard). Windows doesn't operate that same way, and I think compatibility mode only goes back as far as Win95, so the only way I know of is you might try using a program like DOSbox and see if you can get it to run in that. It's a DOS emulator program that sets up a DOS-like environment for the program to run in. This is the only option I can think of, unless you've got a working old 486 machine with DOS on it lying around somewhere.

This game was designed to run on DOS and it needs the EMS set up in the config.sys file which is no longer available in Windows NT/2000/XP. You can try using DOSBox to see if it helps any. http://dosbox.sourceforge.net

Obviously the Windows version, the second from the first list. As for servers it doesn't really matter, any one would do. Choose the one closer to your location.

![]() Oh...uh....I meant to say "Oops, sorry about that, Nuke." Really, I did. I actually was surprised I got in there first coz I can't count the number of times I've been beaten to the answer by somebody else. Kinda funny our answers were almost exactly the same too. |

Ok, I got it and it works. It's a little slow, but I think I can fix that with the directions it gives you to speed up the frame rate. I'm just happy it works. Thank you all.

I am a huge fan of Dosbox... read the read me file and it will make life with old games very easy. |

That's one thing I noticed about using Dosbox, the games seem to run at a slower speed. Even after speeding them up using the method described in the instructions, the games still seem a little jerky to me. I guess its all a ratio of how bad you want to play an old game as compared to how much slowdown and jerkiness you can stand though.

It says somewhere in the FAQ that the speed you'll get will be similar to that of a 486 @ 66 MHz or something like that. I tried playing Chronomaster but gave up. Will wait till I build my Win98FE machine to run my auldies.
